I Had a Girlfriend for Two Hours. Here's What Happened.

I Had a Girlfriend for Two Hours. Here's What Happened.

This happened a while back, but it taught me something I still carry into every relationship since.

There was a girl I was really into. She was reciprocating, or at least it felt that way. We talked a lot, and a lot of what she said sounded right. She loved Jesus. She'd bring up Scripture, talk about her faith, say all the things you'd want to hear from someone you're pursuing.

But every time I tried to ask her something real about her, her past, what she actually wanted, she'd dance around it. Beat around the bush. Turn the conversation back to something spiritual, like quoting a verse could stand in for actually answering the question.

I told myself it was fine. She loves the Lord. That's what matters most, right?

Then one day, we said it. We agreed to be boyfriend and girlfriend.

Two hours later, she took it back. Said she wasn't ready.

Two hours.

Looking back, that wasn't actually the red flag. That was just the moment I finally saw it. The red flag had been there the whole time in every question she dodged, every conversation that stayed surface-level, every time her words said one thing and her follow-through said another.

Here's what I've had to learn the hard way: Christianese isn't the same as character.

Someone can talk about Jesus fluently and still not be someone who's ready to actually show up for you. Talking about faith is easy. Living it out, being consistent, being honest, following through on what you say, that's the part that actually tells you who someone is.

"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." - 1 John 3:18

I wanted someone who loved the Lord. I still do. But I've realized that's not actually the hard part to find, a lot of people can talk the language. What's rare is someone who loves the Lord and is also just real. Easygoing. Someone I can have a normal conversation with that isn't performing spirituality every five minutes. Someone whose words and actions actually match.

That's not me being cynical about faith, it's me learning to actually pay attention. Red flags aren't usually one big moment. They're a pattern of small ones we talk ourselves out of because the language sounded right.

If something in you keeps noticing that someone's words and actions don't line up, that's not you being difficult or unspiritual. That might be exactly the discernment God gave you to protect you.

Reflection Questions for the Week

  1. Have I ever mistaken someone's spiritual language for actual spiritual maturity or character?
  2. Is there a pattern in my relationships, past or present, where someone's words and their follow-through didn't match, and did I let myself see it?
  3. Am I asking the people I'm pursuing real, personal questions, and am I willing to walk away if I don't get real answers?
