Couple From Oklahoma Drive Their 100-Year-Old Car On Route 66 All the Way to California

A couple celebrated the 100th anniversary of America’s most famous roadway by driving Route 66 to California from Oklahoma. And they did it in their 100-year-old green Hupmobile, naturally. With those wooden wheels, there were certainly a few bumps along the way, but they finally made it.

"We were afraid we were going to have to push it the whole way," Ed Fogle said. "But we got through it."

They can’t tell you how many miles the car has because it has no odometer, speedometer, or fuel gauge.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma, couple towed the car to the start of Route 66 in Chicago, where they began their journey. They drove the car slowly as they went and had to replace the radiator and the engine mount—twice—on their Route 66 journey.

The worst moment was out in the desert in Arizona. They heard a bang, but luckily, they had their friend and traveling mechanic, Tom Lord, with them.

Their Trip Had A Few Hiccups

They needed his help as soon as the car got off the truck, as the car had the “hiccups” due to a carburetor issue.

Now, “It’s running good,” Ed says.

They made a lot of memories on their trip, including a stop in Oatman, Arizona, when a donkey tried to eat Jackie Fogle’s purse. It didn’t bother her, though, as she calls the fun memory “a highlight” of her trip.

A Double Anniversary Trip

The couple are fans of road trips. For their honeymoon 25 years ago, the couple traveled Route 66 in a 1959 convertible with the top down the entire time. This trip was also a celebration of their 25th anniversary.

This couple has had several unique experiences with Route 66 that very few people—if any—can say they’ve had. They are very blessed!
