Firefighters Save a Little League Game and Give the Kids a Memory They Will Never Forget

Firefighters save a Little League game and give the kids a memory they will never forget. There’s something about firefighters when you’re a kid. Maybe it’s the flashing lights, the towering trucks, the heavy uniforms that mark them as heroes. Maybe it’s the suit itself that reminds us of the bravery, making them feel larger than life.

For so many of us, firefighters were some of our very first heroes. The kind we waved at in parades, drew in crayon, and believed could fix almost anything.

If you’re from just about any small town in the Midwest, our volunteer firefighters are the star of the show, no matter whether it’s a parade or gassing up to escort our sports teams back into town after a game. It just makes the moments on the field so much sweeter.

The Game Started Off Like Any Other Game

And in Blossom Valley, California, a fire crew reminded a whole Little League field why that still feels true. What started as an ordinary playoff game at Rios Canyon Little League quickly turned into disappointment when the lights suddenly flickered and went dark Tuesday night.

Two teams of boys, ages 10 to 12, were in the third inning of a District 41 playoff game when a nearby power line began arcing just before 7 p.m. The dangerous issue happened right next to the field, forcing everyone to stop and wonder if the game was over before it was supposed to be, as the field went dark.

You can almost picture it. Dusty cleats in the dirt. Nervous parents in folding chairs. Kids gripping gloves and bats while staring at a dark field, hearts sinking. It’s the plotline of every family of young kids in the early summer.

The Field Lost All of Its Power During the Game

“Field lights started to flicker and we lost all power,” parent and league board member Ryan Abel said.

For families, this wasn’t just an inconvenience. If the game couldn’t be finished, playoff schedules, pitch count rules, and future games could all be affected. And we all know how a game of fun turns into disappointment if it can’t be played.

But the Lakeside Fire crews responded to secure the area ahead of utility repairs, and somewhere in the middle of handling the emergency, they saw something deeper: a field full of kids whose night was slipping away.

Fire Captain Lorne then learned the game was in jeopardy. “Maybe it was a little bit of heartfelt moment,” he said. “All is we don’t these kids just go home and be sad. It’s like let’s let him play baseball.”

So that’s exactly what they did.

After getting approval, crews brought in a rescue unit equipped with 15-foot-tall LED light towers with six powerful lights and positioned it near the left field line. The rescue unit remained available for emergency calls, but that night it became something else.

“The game is saved,” Ryan said as massive lights lit up the outfield and much of the infield, allowing the playoff game to continue. And if that wasn’t sweet enough, after the final inning, the kids got a tour of the fire rig.

“Those guys are true heroes,” Ryan said. “Not only in the sense but willing to rally around the community. They saw that, you know, these boys as well as these family members matter.”

Sometimes heroism looks like rushing into danger, and sometimes it looks like showing up with enough light so kids can finish their baseball game. And maybe that’s why firefighters still feel like heroes, even when we grow up.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
