After 50 Years of Teaching, She Said Goodbye to Students in a Way They’ll Never Forget

Everyone’s favorite teacher at St. Margaret School in Narberth, Pennsylvania, retires after 50 years, and it’s so bittersweet. The school held an entire event just for Miss Lopresti. They called it “Miss Lopresti” day, in honor of her last day as a full-time teacher at the school.

Teacher Retires After 50 Years

The day began with a flower crown on a statue of Mary, followed by a mass dedicated to Miss Lopresti. Next was a full auditorium full of students who performed original songs, skits, and poems from her, from pre-K to 8th grade.

Miss Lopresti wanted to be a teacher ever since she was in 2nd grade. But it wasn’t until she graduated from college that she learned how hard it was to be. Her first year, she struggled a lot and cried almost every day. She even quit. But then some other teachers helped her, and she learned to love it more than anything.

“The next year I loved it, and I’ve loved it ever since,” she explained.

She’s Always Made the Classroom and Students, Feel Special

“I never thought I’d make it this far,” she said. “...I love to make learning fun. I play games with them for math. I dress up as a character. Mrs. Pepperoni comes in with a pizza, and they play this math game.”

She got the royal treatment from a former student and firefighter, who gave her a goodbye send-off in a fire engine. As she rolled down the street, hundreds of kids and staff shouted goodbye as she waved through the window.

Teacher’s Legacy Won’t End Here

“It’s like a family here. It’s a community. I know everybody,” she said, adding, “I’ve taught children of children now. It’s just a great place to be.”

With no children of her own, Miss Lopresti doesn’t want to completely stay away from her home away from home. She will be back in a part-time capacity a couple of days a week.
