Granddaughter Steps Into the Spotlight in the Same Role Her Grandmother Did 60 Years Ago

Everyone loves The Sound of Music, and many different venues perform it, even all these years later. It is truly a classic. But in this Minnesota town, their performance has a little something extra special. A young girl, Fifer Steer, gets the part of Marta, the same part her own grandmother, Debbie Turner, played in the epic 1965 film with Julie Andrews.

When Fifer’s mom heard that they were putting on a performance of The Sound of Music in their town of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, she thought it would be fun to go. Then, her daughter started getting ready to audition. And no one was to know the big secret about her grandmother.

“I couldn’t believe it,” 69-year-old Debbie Turner says. “I didn’t know she was trying out. And it was pretty neat, pretty exciting.”

Debbie played Marta Von Trapp in the movie, the second youngest of the seven Von Trapp children.

“Oh, it was so much fun. All we did was play,” she shares about being in the movie.

The directors in the Thief River Falls production had no idea of this connection when they cast the young Fifer.

The Young Girl Had a Spark On Stage

“She just has that spark on stage,” one of the directors shared. She did find out about her grandmother after she was cast.

Fifer is seven years old, and so was Debbie when she filmed the movie. Which means both of them had loose teeth during their performances. Debbie had to use a false plate in her mouth for the movie.

What an amazing thing for a granddaughter and grandmother to share. We wish them both the best.
