High School Throws Their 90-Year-Old Well-Loved Janitor a Birthday Party

A high school throws their 90-year-old, well-loved janitor a birthday party, and the students think he deserves more than what they could offer, so grab a tissue because this heartwarming story might make you a little misty-eyed.

There is something special about birthdays. They give us a chance to pause and celebrate another year of memories, another year of laughter, and the people who have made our lives better simply by being in them. The older we get, the more precious those moments become.

A Sweet Birthday Celebration For a Navy Veteran

That is what made a recent birthday celebration at Tantasqua Regional High School so incredibly sweet.

When Bobby Collins walked into the school auditorium, he thought it was a special announcement or maybe a pep rally. He couldn’t have been more wrong! Instead, he was greeted by an entire school ready to celebrate him.

Students and staff surprised him with a birthday party filled with gifts, poems, custom T-shirts, hugs, and a tribute video honoring his 50 years of service to the school. When you watch the video, you can’t help but grin as Bobby pops off a smile standing in front of so many students and friends who sang a sweet, happy birthday. After all, how many people get to celebrate a milestone birthday surrounded by generations of lives they've touched?

But the sweetest part is how Bobby shifted the celebration away from himself and thanked his wife for being by his side all of these years. What surprises everyone the most is that Bobby wasn’t always doing what he loved. Before taking care of the school, he served in the Navy. And while students have come and gone, Bobby has remained a steady presence, greeting them with kindness and encouragement.

"I want you to know that if it wasn't for this gal here, I don't know where I would be, but I would not be here," Bobby said of his wife of more than 50 years. That simple moment may have been the sweetest gift of all.

Students describe Bobby as a father figure and a grandfather figure. Principal Peter Dufresne said the school wanted Bobby to know just how much he is loved and appreciated.

At a time when the world often moves too fast, this celebration served as a beautiful reminder that kindness, faithful service, and people matter.

As for Bobby, retirement is nowhere on his horizon. "To rest is to rust," he said. I love that saying! At 90 years old, Bobby is still showing up, still serving, and still making a difference. And judging by the smiles and tears in that auditorium, this birthday is one he will never forget.

"Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness." Proverbs 16:31
