Retiring Teacher Gives Each of Her Students a Special Personalized Gift to Say Goodbye

A retiring teacher gives each of her students a special personalized gift to say goodbye. We all have that one teacher who never quite leaves our hearts. Maybe they're the reason we learned to believe in ourselves. Maybe they tucked encouraging notes into our desks, remembered our favorite books, or made us feel seen on the days we felt invisible. For the students in Ankeny, Iowa, that teacher is Kim Rohlf.

After 35 years of teaching at Westwood Elementary School, Kim decided to retire. But before she taught her final lesson, she spent countless weekends stitching together something far more lasting than a goodbye.

The Teacher Handcrafted a Quilt For Every Student

Kim handcrafted a quilt for every student in her second-grade class. Each one was personalized. Some featured holidays. Others celebrated birthdays. A few reflected special interests, such as dinosaurs or sports. Every stitch was designed to remind her students that they were known and loved.

"I love teaching, and I love quilting, so it gives me a little to share my love with them as they leave and I end my chapter of teaching," Kim said.

As if the quilts weren't enough, she also hand-wrote a personal note to every child. It's the kind of gift that can be pulled from a closet years from now and instantly bring back memories of a teacher who cared enough to notice the little things.

The Teacher Gave the Students the Best Gift

Second grader Gabrielle understood just how special the gesture was.

"Every quilt is made based on our personalities," she said. "She would add special details about us and she would make sure that it is very nice."

The closer retirement came, the harder the goodbyes became.

"It's very heartwarming, it makes this harder than I thought it was going to be, but I'm excited to start that new chapter in my life," Kim said. "I thought it could just be at the end of the year and walk out the door. They're making it a little bit harder than that."

And maybe that's the mark of a life well lived. The people who love us make leaving hard.

For 35 years, Kim didn't just act like a teacher; she stitched kindness into young hearts. Now, as she turns the page to a new chapter, dozens of children will carry a tangible reminder that they mattered to someone who chose to see them.
