For Their 40th Anniversary, Utah Couple Decides to Bike 4,000 Miles Across the Country

For their 40th anniversary, this Utah couple decides to bike 4,000 miles across the country. Bliss and Robert Sawyer of Saratoga Springs, UT, recently set out on what may be their most ambitious journey yet: biking across America from Washington state to New Jersey in just over three months. At least they think they can make it that far in that amount of time.

It’s not something you hear about when asking couples what they plan to do for anniversary trips. Most would think 40 years of marriage would equal a cruise or an island paradise. But not this couple! Their idea of celebrating involves the open ride and pumped-up tires.

They say their love for cycling began decades ago. Since then, they've pedaled countless miles across the United States and even around the world, exploring destinations such as the United Kingdom, Norway, and Switzerland. Yet this challenge felt different.

For Bliss, the excitement wasn't simply reaching the finish line. It was experiencing America at the pace of a bicycle. "Seeing our own country from a bicycle," Bliss said. "To me, that's kind of the magic of it because you see things differently."

Their adventure is far from luxurious. The Sawyers planned to spend many nights camping, occasionally stopping at roadside hotels for a little rest and recovery. Day after day, they would face changing landscapes, unpredictable weather, and long stretches of open road. But they wouldn’t want it any other way.

What makes their story especially sweet is the reason behind the ride. While crossing the country together, Bliss and Robert are also raising money for two organizations close to their hearts: Tabitha's Way Food Pantry and Habitat for Humanity. Over the years, their perspective on cycling has changed. When they were younger riders, they focused on speed and distance. Now, they are focused on something much more meaningful.

"This is just us to enjoy being together, enjoy the scenery, listen to music," Robert said. There is something beautiful about that.

In a world that often urges us to rush through life, Bliss and Robert are choosing a different path. Mile by mile, they are making memories, helping others, and reminding us that some of life's greatest adventures are not about how quickly you arrive but who is beside you along the way.

Their journey across America is a symbol of their enduring love, shared purpose, and the joy of seeing the world one pedal stroke at a time.
