A Girl's Volleyball Team in Texas Raises Money to Buy Their Custodian a Car

A girl’s volleyball team in Texas raises money to buy their custodian a car, and it reminds us of the power that is bound up in the little hearts of children. It is a truly remarkable story of courage, compassion, and kindness. There are moments when heaven brushes close, when kindness breaks open like sunlight through clouds, and you can almost feel the heartbeat of God in the way people love one another.

At Community High School in Collin County, Texas, that moment came on an ordinary Wednesday afternoon, when a group of teenage girls showed the world what wild compassion looks like in action.

Their Custodian Needed a Car

For years, Abel Rodriguez, the school’s beloved custodian, has been the quiet hero of the halls, showing up before dawn, staying late into the night, cheering at games, sweeping the same gym floors where dreams are made.

“He’s just really helpful, honestly,” said Addee Kuenstler, one of the Lady Braves volleyball players. “He supports us through everything. He’s our biggest cheerleader.”

But recently, the team learned something that stopped them cold — Abel didn’t have a car of his own. One night, after another long day of work, he stayed at the school until 1 a.m., just waiting for someone to pick him up. That’s when compassion moved from their hearts to their hands.

They Started a GoFundMe to Buy Their Custodian a Car

The girls started a GoFundMe campaign, hoping to raise enough money for a used car. Within a single day, they’d gathered more than $3,000. Within the week, $9,000.

And then, kindness multiplied. A local dealership, Group 1 Ford of Rockwall, joined in, offering to help make the dream a reality. Another business, J.R. Arey State Farm Agency, stepped up too, adding insurance and gas money.

When the moment came, Abel was told there was an “emergency” outside. Instead, he stepped into a sea of cheering students and staff: over a hundred voices chanting his name, “Abel! Abel! Abel!” — as a gleaming car waited under the autumn sky.

It Was Quite the Miracle

Eyes wide, hands trembling, Abel could only manage to whisper through tears, “I’m so happy with the community. I love you. I love you forever, guys.”

Jorryn Collins, one of the students, smiled through her own tears. “Seeing the actual car here is just such a miracle,” she said. “We wanted to repay him for all that he’s done for us.”

And in that moment, what had begun as a small act of gratitude became something much greater — a glimpse of the kingdom of God on earth, where love runs wild, and where generosity builds bridges. Where a custodian becomes family, and a high school truly lives up to its name.

It was the happiest drive home of Abel’s life, and a reminder for the rest of us that love, when given freely, always finds its way back home.

Galatians 6:9–10  “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.”
