In the Wake of Unthinkable Loss, These Parents Share Their Son’s Last Message

Tragedy hit a California family when their 4-year-old son, Ayden Fang, was hit by a car and died. The vehicle jumped the sidewalk outside a restaurant where he was playing. Now, his parents are working on sharing the last message their son left behind.

On August 8, 2025, in Burlingame, California, a 19-year-old was startled by an e-bike that struck her car. This resulted in her hitting Ayden as well as the 6-year-old girl he was playing with. She survived. The driver smashed into the Poke restaurant where Ayden and his family were eating.

Ayden was a Very Giving Child

In an interview with ABC 7 News, Ting Ting Liu, Ayden’s mom, shares about her son. "He was a very giving child. He was generous with love. Either with friends or strangers."

"I miss him and his hugs. His favorite thing to do was hugs and kisses. He'll run over and say, 'daddy can I get a hug and kiss?' he would say 'daddy, I love you' and I would just hear this trail of laughter, and we are never going to have that again," Ayden’s father, Ming Fang shares.

Their World Stopped That Day

Their world stopped that horrific day. "He was there right by the door with his friend, the six-year-old girl and one of our friends was out there as well with the younger sibling of that girl and next thing we know, our table and chairs were getting pushed by this SUV inside the restaurant,” Ming shares about that day.

Ming’s next thought was, “Where is Ayden?”

It was a little more than a week after the tragedy that his parents found a message on a Lego tower he had made. "It was sitting there for over a week, and we never paid too much attention to it until an hour before his viewing. I suddenly noticed the tower looked like a monument and with a closer look I saw the message that said ‘Protect our City.’ Those blocks are not Legos. They are part of a promotional toy from the San Francisco seawall project. There are other blocks with writing in them, but the ones he chose was to ‘Protect our city,'” Ting Ting shares

They Are Sharing Their Son's Last Message

Ayden had left a clear message: to “protect our city.” His parents will now be turning that message into his legacy. They will create a permanent memorial at the crash site and explore other ideas that can complement road safety initiatives.

Ting Ting is also creating a Little Free Library that will be painted in the same colors as Ayden’s Lego tower. The Burlingame Library will be donating books to help start the library. “He loved reading and learning, so I think this is a perfect symbol for who Ayden is,” Ting Ting says.

After they lost Ayden, a family friend set up a GoFundMe, which has now raised over $100,000. Ming and Ting Ting plan to use it for expenses associated with grief counseling, pedestrian safety initiatives in the city, and a memorial scholarship at Ayden’s school in his name.

Losing a child is one of the most difficult things a parent has to go through. Prayers to Ming, Ting Ting, and Ayden’s little brother, Blake, as they grieve the loss of their little boy.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” - John 14:27
