School Bus Driver’s Split-Second Decision Saves 4-Year-Old From Lake Owasso

A school bus driver’s split-second decision saves a 4-year-old from Lake Owasso. Some stories begin quietly—just a school bus humming along its final route, a driver ready to finish her shift and head back home. But some stories crack open like miracles… wild and courageous and utterly unplanned.

That’s how Thursday unfolded for Mebal Kaanyi, a school bus driver in Ramsey County, Minnesota, though calling her “just a bus driver” doesn’t even come close.

It Was Cold On That Day

“It was cold that day,” she said, remembering how the wind bit at her cheeks. She was easing her yellow bus down Chandler and Owasso Boulevard when she saw him—a tiny boy, sprinting barefoot down a hill, tears streaking his face.

“I see this little guy coming, running down the street,” Mebal recalled.

She didn’t know yet that his aunt had called 911.

She didn’t know deputies were searching.

She didn’t know this little one was missing.

She Knew She Had to Save the Child

All she knew was that a child was running toward Lake Owasso, toward water glinting dark and cold.

“When the kid went to the fence and touched the gate, and it just opened,” she said, hand pressed to her chest, “that moment—my heart skipped.”

She parked the bus, secured it, and ran. Everything in her could have frozen. Because here’s the thing—Mebal cannot swim. Not one stroke.

She Had Never Swam a Day in Her Life

“I’ve never swam in my entire life,” she said. “I get goosebumps just looking at the water. I’m so afraid of water.”

But love is louder than fear. And God stirs courage like wildfire through the veins of those who choose compassion. She plunged into that lake, this woman who feared deep water more than anything, because love demanded a wild, impossible yes.

“When he was struggling to breathe,” she said, “I think he was pushing himself toward me… so I grabbed his hand and I was like, ‘Thank goodness. I got you.’”

The School Bus Driver Saves the Child

Two small words, spoken like a prayer: I got you. Deputies arrived moments later. Ramsey County Sgt. Matt Marson shook his head with awe.

“She was integral in saving that child’s life,” he said. “Without her intervention, that child would’ve probably been dead in that water… She’s a hero, plain and simple.”

But Mebal, humble, grounded, brave in the way heaven recognizes, just shook her head. “This is what everybody should do,” she said. “We need to live in a society whereby we care for one another.”

This is the Gospel Made Visible

And isn’t that the gospel made visible?

Isn’t that what Jesus meant when He said we are each other’s keepers?

That love is not passive—it leaps fences and wades into waters we fear, just to say, ‘I got you.’

Mebal will receive a life-saving award. But heaven already shouted over her that day.

Because sometimes a hero doesn’t wear a cape, she wears a bus driver’s jacket, fear in her chest, courage in her bones, and love like a rising tide.

And this little boy? He is alive today because a woman who couldn’t swim chose to jump anyway. Because God still plants bravery in unexpected places. Because love always runs toward the water.
