Family Battling Daughter’s Rare Illness Gets the Perfect Secret Santa Surprise

A family battling a daughter’s rare illness gets the perfect secret Santa surprise. Mom to mom, this is one of those stories that makes you stop whatever you’re doing, put your hand over your heart, and whisper, Thank You, Jesus.

Because we know this life. The appointments. The long drives. The nights when sleep doesn’t come easy because your child’s breathing is all you’re listening for. We know what it’s like to carry worry in one hand and hope in the other and keep showing up anyway.

The Family Was Going Through a Lot

In Idaho Falls, Jodie and Eric live that reality every single day with their two-year-old daughter, Kylie. Since birth, Kylie has endured more than 30 surgeries and medical procedures—most of them at Primary Children’s Hospital in Utah. She also lives with a rare, incurable condition that causes her to stop breathing for extended periods of time.

If you’re a mom, you already feel that ache.

Because the family has only one working vehicle, Jodie takes Kylie back and forth to Utah for medical care. That leaves Eric at home—without transportation—but never without responsibility. He works 10-hour shifts, bikes to and from work every day, and then takes on additional jobs to help provide for his family.

He Had to Ride His Bike to Work

When asked about riding his bike to work, Eric said simply, “I did… because it was clear this morning.” The ride home, he admitted, was “very wet and slippery.”

That kind of answer tells you everything about the kind of dad—and husband—he is. No drama. No complaints. Just doing what needs to be done.

Earlier this year, Jodie and Kylie were gone for nearly six months, moving between hospitals. Now, Kylie may soon need to travel to Boston so doctors can better understand what’s happening in her tiny body.

It’s a lot. The kind of lot that would flatten most of us.

And then, right in the middle of it all, grace arrived disguised as a knock on the door.

Nate from East Idaho News showed up with a message from Secret Santa. He explained why they were there and asked to share a Christmas gift with the family.

They Opened the Gift to Find a Key

First came a small package. Then another. When Kylie opened the second gift and discovered a key, Nate gently explained, “That’s a key to a car. Secret Santa just gave you guys a car.”

Eric’s response was immediate and stunned. “What?” he said.

Outside sat a Toyota RAV4—left there for them. Along with $1,000 to help cover insurance and registration. No more biking in the dark. No more scrambling for rides. No more impossible choices between work, groceries, and being present with family.

You Can Feel the Weight Lifting

As a mom, you can almost feel the weight lifting from Jodie’s shoulders in that moment. The quiet relief. The knowing that help has finally arrived. All Eric could say was, “Thank you so much.”

Watching Kylie climb into the warm car, sitting in her mama’s lap, holding that key, feels like watching hope made visible. It’s the kind of moment that reminds us God sees the long nights and the quiet sacrifices. He sees the parents who keep going even when they’re exhausted beyond words.

This is so much more than a story about a car. It’s about compassion, help, and kindness. It’s about remembering that even in the hardest seasons, God still shows up—sometimes through a stranger with a gift and a heart full of obedience.

And if you’re anything like me, you finish this story the same way you started it:

With tears.

With gratitude.

And with a whispered, Thank You, Jesus.

Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
