One Year After Losing Boys in a Fire, Parents Find Light in the Form of a Beautiful Blessing

It has been a year since Reina and James Brice lost their sons, 6-year-old William and 3-year-old Zachariah, in a devastating house fire. When the boys were found, William was covering his younger brother. It appeared that he was protecting him.

“Birthdays are hard,” Reina shared. “Holidays are hard.”

Although William and Zachariah were still alive when they arrived at the hospital, they passed away a few days later. "This literally happened a year ago,” James says. “Some days it feels like it was 10 years ago. Other days it feels like it was yesterday."

Although their prayers for the boys were not answered in the way they had hoped, they realized that by being generous, they could help answer the prayers of other families through donation. The boys were organ donors. The family received a confirmation letter that eight successful transplants took place and that lives were saved.

We Can’t Always Understand Why Things Happen

One man was given just weeks to live until he received one of the boy’s organs. Another little girl received a liver. "I just remember on those walks just crying, because I thought — as hard as it was to be working to save her — that I had the privilege to do that, and there was a family somewhere that was mourning,” the little girl’s mother, Sheila Moir, shared. “I didn't know the full story but I just knew that there was a mom somewhere who was mourning her child and kind of drew strength from that."

The loss of not one, but two children in such a way is completely devastating for any family. We as humans can never truly understand why these things happen. But we know that God is always walking beside us, even in the most difficult times.

Reina Found Out She Was Pregnant

Knowing that their boys saved other lives is a huge blessing for Reina and James. But there is more. They couldn’t have predicted what God had in store for them, the blessings that were ahead.

“We can’t make this up,” James said. “That’s part of why we’re agreeing to do this interview again.”

Reina found out she was pregnant. Amidst the loss and the grief, there was hope. Hannah Joy, their sweet daughter, was born the day before the anniversary of the fire. Her due date was one year to the day, doctors determined the boys would not survive.

May God’s Grace Be With Them

Although the birth of their daughter is a wonderful thing, the grief over the loss of the boys is still there. "It's still an ongoing thing, and I think it's OK to give people permission that, hey, this doesn't go away,” James says. “Like, it's just part of you."

We pray for the Brice family as they raise their daughter, while still healing and grieving for their sweet boys. May God’s grace be with them through it all.
