SubSuite

SubSuite

Yes, I know "SubSuite" is an invented word. But still, the announcer, Mr. Taylor, was a trained television professional. The man even had his glasses on. Oh, well--so he "substituted" my invented word for a real one. Whaddyagonnado? ;) That was supposed to say, "SubSuite...ilustrates how modern dance uses the structured improvisation to help dancers create the 'moment of truth', much like...". Sorry.

I called this piece "SubSuite" because it was a part of a "suite" of spirituals centered around a chariot theme. The full suite included "Ride the Chariot", "Swing Low, Sweet (get it? :^) Chariot", and "Swing Down, Chariot". For this totally improvised solo, I only included the 2nd part and part of the 3rd part. Another part of the 3rd part can be heard during the closing credits, but if you want to hear the whole thing, you'll have to buy the album.

You will notice, as I post more dances, that almost all of my "improvised" choreography will contain a few of the same signature moves. I can't apologize for having a few favorite moves. These include the "3 consecutive barrel rolls", the "reverse handstand" and the "pullup from prone position". These movements, and some others from this solo, eventually made it into my "choreographed" choreography, as well.

This performance was my 1st attempt at using dance as "ministry", and marked the beginning of a journey away from secular choreography, for the most part.
