He Fought in 3 Wars, Now This Veteran Is Celebrating 100 Years of Life
May 01, 2026

Can you believe this man fought in three wars, and now this veteran is celebrating 100 years of life. And here’s the kicker, he’s aiming for 110!
There’s something deeply humbling—almost sacred—about a life that stretches across 100 years. And when you look at the story of John Mazzella, you can’t help but pause and take it in. One hundred years. A full century of living, loving, serving, and still choosing to wake up each day with purpose. It’s not just impressive—it’s inspiring in a way that settles deep in your bones.
He Filled His 100 Years

He didn’t just live those years… he filled them. For 30 years, he served faithfully in the military, stepping into some of the hardest seasons our world has known—World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Thirty years of showing up, of perseverance, of doing what needed to be done even when it wasn’t easy. And if that alone doesn’t leave you in awe, what he did after retirement will.
He kept going. Most people might slow down after a lifetime of service—but not John. He laced up his shoes and started running marathons. Not just any marathons, but ones that pushed his limits—like running up Pikes Peak, a mountain that rises over 14,000 feet into the sky. Three times. At an age when most are told to take it easy, he leaned into strength, movement, and determination.
And even now, at 100 years old, he’s still walking, still lifting weights, still living with intention. But maybe what stands out even more than his strength is his spirit.
The 100-Year-Old Veteran is Going For 110 Years
After losing his wife of 63 years—a kind of heartbreak most of us can’t even imagine carrying—he still chooses optimism. He still speaks life. He still looks ahead and says, “I’m going for 110.” There’s something so powerful about that kind of hope—the kind that refuses to dim, even after loss, even after time has taken so much.
He added, "I'm an optimistic individual, in spite of losing my wife after 63 years of marriage. I'm still positive about life. Optimistic and positive.”
It makes you stop and think… What does it mean to really live? Not just to exist, not just to get through the days—but to keep showing up with courage, with grit, with a willingness to keep moving forward no matter what season you’re in.

John’s life is a reminder that purpose doesn’t expire, no matter how old we are. That strength isn’t limited by age. It’s never too late to keep dreaming, keep moving, keep believing there’s still more ahead. And maybe that’s what makes his 100 years so extraordinary. Not just the number… but the way he lived every single one of them.
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4
