The Waiting Season Isn't Wasted

The Waiting Season Isn't Wasted

Waking up at a crisp 5:00 am is never easy. You’re in your warm bed, comfortable and the second you think about getting out from under the covers, you almost start to shiver. I remember feeling excited, but there was also a part of me that just wanted to stay in bed. But where’s the fun in that?

Life is about experiences. It’s about getting out of your comfort zone.

We made it to our fishing spot, stepped into the water and immediately I realized this wasn’t some crystal-clear Bahamas-type water. You couldn’t see what your feet were touching. Every step was uncertain. You’re feeling around, trying not to slip, stepping over rocks you can’t even see. It felt like solving a puzzle just to move forward.

And I remember thinking, "This isn’t for people who are scared of the unknown."

But if you’re willing to step into it, you might find something great.

That’s when it hit me.

Life with God can feel a lot like this.

There are seasons where you can’t clearly see what’s ahead. You don’t know where your next step is landing. You’re just trying to stay steady, trusting you won’t slip.

And then there’s the fishing part.

If you’ve ever fly fished, you know it’s not instant. You cast, and cast and cast again. A lot of times, nothing happens. It’s repetitive. It can feel slow. It can even feel discouraging.

But then, suddenly, something bites.

And everything changes.

I think a lot of us are in what I’d call a “casting season.”

Maybe you’re working hard, applying for jobs, showing up every day and nothing seems to be hitting yet.

Maybe you’re single, praying for the right person, trying to be patient, but it feels like nothing is happening.

If I’m being real, that’s the season I’m in right now.

It’s a lot like standing in that water. You can’t fully see what God is doing. You don’t know when something is going to “bite.” And if you’re not careful, you can start to wonder if anything is happening at all.

But I’ve been reminding myself that just because I don’t see movement, it doesn’t mean God isn’t moving.

There’s still growth happening.
There’s still preparation happening.
There’s still purpose in the waiting.

And just like fishing, you don’t quit just because nothing has happened yet.

You stay consistent.
You stay expectant.
You keep casting.

Maybe you’re inviting friends to church, trying to live boldly for Jesus and you’re not seeing the response you hoped for.

It can feel like you’re standing in cold, unclear water, just waiting.

But Scripture reminds us:

“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9

There is a due season. But it requires you to keep casting.

“Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed…” Ecclesiastes 11:6

You don’t know which cast is the one. So you keep showing up.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” Proverbs 3:5

Even when the water isn’t clear. Even when you can’t see your footing.

“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel…” Mark 16:15

You don’t control who responds. You just stay faithful to cast.

And for anyone else in a season of waiting, especially in singleness:

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

God isn’t ignoring you. He’s shaping you, aligning your heart and writing a story that’s better than anything you could rush.

So wherever you are right now, keep going.

Keep casting.
Keep showing up.
Keep trusting.

Because just like in fishing, the breakthrough often comes when you least expect it.

And when it does, you’ll realize that the waiting season was never wasted. It was preparing you the whole time.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life do you feel like you’re in a “casting season” right now, and how have you been responding to the waiting?
  2. In what areas have you been tempted to give up because you haven’t seen results yet?
  3. What would it look like for you this week to stay consistent and trust God, even when you can’t see what He’s doing?
