When a Church Leader Collapsed, This 9-Year-Old’s Brave Response Made All the Difference

When a Church Leader Collapsed, This 9-Year-Old’s Brave Response Made All the Difference

When a church leader collapsed, this 9-year-old’s brave response made all the difference and saved a life. There are moments that make you stop and whisper, “God, You are so near.”  And in Martin, Michigan, that moment came through a 9-year-old boy named Logan Vangemert.

It happened quietly, not on a stage or under bright lights, but in the middle of an ordinary day at church in nearby Richland. Logan was just a fourth grader, the kind of kid who probably still has grass stains on his jeans and a heart wide open to the world. And yet, when his church supervisor, Tom, suddenly went into cardiac arrest, everything changed in an instant. Where others may have frozen, Logan stepped forward.

He Had Watched a CPR Video the Day Before

He remembered what he had seen just the day before—a CPR video. And with courage far bigger than his small frame, he began chest compressions. He didn’t wait. He didn’t second-guess. He just acted. And later, when Logan tried to explain it, his words were simple but holy in their own way: “Whenever I helped him is when the Holy Spirit talked to me.”

Oh, let that sink in for a moment. The Holy Spirit… speaking to a fourth grader, guiding his hands, steadying his hammering heart, and helping him save a life.

Friends, heroes don’t always look the way we expect them to. Sometimes they’re not wearing uniforms or standing in the spotlight. Sometimes they’re just little ones, kids, sitting in a classroom, learning and growing and quietly carrying courage they don’t even fully understand yet.

Logan Was Celebrated For What He Did

Logan was later celebrated at an assembly in Martin, surrounded by classmates and teachers who clapped and cheered for his accomplishments. And I can only imagine his mom, Jessica, sitting there with tears in her eyes, her heart full in that way only a mother understands—so proud it almost hurts. Because how do you even put into words the moment your child steps into something so brave, so selfless, so life-changing?

This sweet boy didn’t just save a man’s life—he reminded all of us that God can use anyone, at any age, in any moment. Even a fourth grader. Even your child. Even you.

The Child Who Performed CPR is a Blessing to His Community

What a blessing Logan is. What a beautiful reminder that courage comes in all shapes and sizes—and sometimes, it sounds like a quiet whisper from the Holy Spirit saying, “Go… help.”

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers…”  1 Timothy 4:12

A Prayer to Remember the Rewards of Waiting - Your Daily Prayer - April 23

Waiting for life to make sense, and for a heart full of hurts to heal, ended up planting a garden of strength in my soul. Because I now know... that when nothing makes sense, God sees the outcome.
