84-Year-Old Hero Honored for Selfless Decision to Give a Kidney to His Son-in-Law

An 84-year-old organ donor just made the decision to give up a kidney for his son-in-law. The man, Graham Sisson, broke a hospital record. And his son-in-law didn’t expect to receive such a huge gift.

“I was shell-shocked by Graham’s decision,” said the son-in-law, Ian Tonks. “Total disbelief — he was so confident about wanting to do it. There is truly no gift in the world that matches what he did.”

Graham is the oldest male at Manchester Royal Infirmary hospital to ever donate a kidney.

Ian had already received a transplant over ten years ago, but his health had declined, requiring another transplant. He’s been on dialysis since 2018.

Ian had to put his life nearly on hold. He’s had little time for enjoyment, like doing his hobbies.

Kidney Journey Brings Blessing in Disguise

Many of his friends and family stepped up to give a kidney, but none of them matched. One friend even found out that he needed emergency heart surgery during the testing process. Ian says that was a blessing in disguise.

Ian and others never thought Graham would qualify, given his age. But he proved them wrong after months of rigorous tests.

“I could see how incredibly ill he was, and I wanted to help him get his life back,” Graham said. “By this point, he was so ill that if the operation had been delayed, he may well have run out of time.”

A Successful Surgery

On the day of the surgery, both men felt calm.

“Because of my age, I was more concerned about post-surgery,” Graham said. “But having met the staff at the hospital, I was completely confident about the procedure.”

Ian says, “It still feels incredible just to go to the toilet normally and not be tied to a machine. Even the little things in life are massive now — like my bedroom being a bedroom and not having a dialysis machine dominating it.”

Thanks to Graham, he now lives a much more normal life.

“Without Graham, I would have died within a matter of months,” he said. “To be that age and do what he has done is incredible.”

A Humble Father-In-Law

Graham doesn’t enjoy all the praise and attention. He’s just glad Ian is okay.

It’s amazing that Graham was still able to donate his kidney despite his age. This raises awareness of the need for kidney donors. Graham shows that kidney health is not always affected by age, and many elderly people are not as limited as some would think!
