Assistant Manager at a Grocery Store Stops a Scam and Saves a Couple From Losing a Lot of Money

This is incredible; an assistant manager at a grocery store became an unexpected hero when the employee stopped a financial scam, protecting a couple from losing a lot of money. Sometimes heroes don’t wear badges or stand behind podiums. Sometimes they’re simply paying attention while working a shift at the grocery store.

At a Food Lion in Richland County, South Carolina, assistant manager Amanda Greenlaw noticed something that didn’t feel right. The elderly couple standing near a coin machine didn’t have any change, yet they looked nervous and distracted. Amanda approached them to offer help, but what she discovered next set off alarm bells.

They Thought They Needed to Buy Bitcoin to Save Their Son

The woman was on the phone while the husband explained they needed to buy Bitcoin. According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the couple had been told their son had been in a traffic accident, and they needed to send $5,000 for bond money immediately. Sadly, Amanda had seen this kind of scam before.

“I’ve done this more times than I care to admit,” she said.

Without hesitation, she told the couple to hang up the phone. Thankfully, they listened. After speaking with them for about ten minutes, Amanda helped them realize something wasn’t adding up. The husband later returned to tell her they had contacted their son and discovered he was perfectly fine and exactly where he was supposed to be.

That quick moment of awareness and taking action saved the couple from losing $5,000.

Cybersecurity experts say scammers often rely on fear and urgency to pressure victims into sending money through gift cards, cryptocurrency machines, or ATMs, where the transactions are difficult to trace. Alex Galloway, interim director of cyber compliance at the University of South Carolina, explained that noticing someone making large purchases while appearing nervous or speaking on the phone can be a warning sign that a scam is happening in real time.

But Amanda said it best, and the key is simply being aware of what’s happening around you. Her actions didn’t go unnoticed. Sheriff Leon Lott presented her with a certificate of appreciation for stepping in and protecting the couple before the scam could unfold.

Stories like this remind us that everyday kindness and attentiveness can make a powerful difference. In a world where scams are becoming more sophisticated, sometimes all it takes is one person asking the right question at the right moment to stop someone from losing everything. We all need more people like Amanda watching out for the more vulnerable members in our communities. What a blessing!
