Married Since 1951: Their 75-Year Secret to Lasting Love

For one couple’s 75th anniversary, they shared the secret to love that lasts. After 7 and a half decades, their answer is pretty good. They’ve just tried not to fault each other for their mistakes.

Hank and Marylyn Hank Cydrus were just 19 and 16 years old when they eloped in 1951 in California. Soon after, Hank was drafted for the Korean War. After he completed service, they settled in Ohio and had 3 kids. Now, they have 9 grandkids and 16 great-grandkids.

"Being able to share with each other the decisions they need to make, and not argue about money and things like that," Hank said of how their marriage has lasted.

Marilyn added, "Do for each other and get along. Don’t try to find something wrong with the other person, try to find the good in them."

Their granddaughter Katrina said her grandparents are "the living example of what it truly means to choose each other every single day."

"From the summers I spent with you as a child — filled with laughter, life lessons, tear filled talks at the kitchen table, and the comfort of knowing I was deeply loved — to the cherished time I get with you now, your presence in my life has been one of my greatest blessings," she told them. "You didn’t just build a marriage… you built a legacy. A legacy of patience, faith, sacrifice, humor, forgiveness, and enduring love.”

“Watching the way you care for one another, respect one another, and continue to hold hands after 75 years has shaped my understanding of what marriage is meant to be,” she said

Their Marriage is a Lasting Influence

She says her grandparents' loving marriage has had a significant influence on her own.

"When I think about commitment, I think of you. When I think about working through life’s seasons together, I think of you. When I think about choosing love even on the hard days, I think of you," she said. "Your story reminds me that lasting love isn’t about perfection — it’s about perseverance, partnership, and putting each other first."

She added that her grandparents gave her a perfect image of what “forever looks like.”

"Thank you for the memories, the wisdom, the prayers, and the steady foundation you’ve given us all," she continued. "75 years is extraordinary — but the love behind it is even more so. I love you both more than words can say.”
