High Schoolers Take a Class and Give Back By Fixing Cars and Donating Them to Single Moms

High schoolers take a class and give back to the community by fixing cars and donating them to single moms. I could not love this act of kindness and compassion more than I do. What an incredible way to teach about selfless giving, compassion, and learning a trade all at once.

There are some stories that don’t just make you smile—they make your heart pause, soften, and whisper, this is what it looks like to love your neighbor well.

It is Quite the Act of Kindness

In Louisa County, Virginia, a group of high school students are doing something extraordinary with ordinary tools. In a classroom that smells like oil and metal and hard work, they’re not just learning a trade… they’re learning how to change someone’s entire life.

These students—kids, really—are rolling up their sleeves and repairing donated cars. Not for a grade. Not for recognition. But for single moms who need a way forward.

Through a partnership with the nonprofit Giving Words, founded by Eddie and Ginny Brown, these cars are restored and given away at no cost. Because they realized something simple and profound: without transportation, everything else feels out of reach. Jobs. Education. Doctor’s appointments. Stability.

The Teenagers Stepped Up to Fix Cars for Single Moms

So these teenagers step into the gap. They check every bolt. Tighten every screw. Make sure everything is “torqued to spec,” because they know what’s at stake. This isn’t just a project—it’s someone’s future sitting on four wheels.

And oh, the beauty of that kind of responsibility. One student shared how emotional it becomes watching the moms receive their cars. “When they tear up and cry, it makes you want to tear up and cry.” And you can just picture it, can’t you? Grease still on their hands, standing a little taller, realizing they didn’t just fix a car… they helped restore hope.

Their teacher, Shane Robertson—once a student in that very same program—said it best: “It’s not just a car. It’s not just nuts and bolts. It’s literally the difference between someone making it and someone not.”

And there it is. Because for Jessica Williams, a single mom of three, this wasn’t just a set of keys. It was a doorway. A chance to go back to school. To get a better job. To have more time with her children. To breathe again. And she won’t forget the hands that made it possible. Neither will we.

These Teenagers Are Choosing Compassion

Because in a world that can feel loud and heavy and uncertain, here are these teenagers—quietly choosing compassion. Learning that real success isn’t just about what you build for yourself, but what you give away to someone else.

And I don’t know about you… but I think that’s the kind of lesson that changes everything.

A Prayer for Stillness When Life Won’t Slow Down - Your Daily Prayer - April 30

If your soul is starved for stillness today, the Lord would love nothing more than your nestling up with him. Sitting still beside him in the safety and security of his refuge. Hearing his whispers of love, receiving his outstretched arms of comfort and care, and then lingering in his peaceful presence.
