Woman Tells a Thief, 'God Loves You' and Stops Her From Stealing a Package

A woman tells a thief ‘God loves you’ and stops her from stealing a package. It happened in an ordinary moment on an ordinary street in South Philadelphia—packages on porches, people coming and going, life moving along like it always does—until one woman decided not to stay silent.

Bernadette Williams saw a woman reaching for a package that didn’t belong to her, and in that split second, she could have looked away. She could have stayed quiet. But instead, she used her voice. She called out, telling the woman she was better than that, reminding her that she was loved, that God loved her.

"You're better than that," Bernadette can be heard calling to the woman. "Get some help. You're better than that. I love you. God loves you."

And just like that, the moment shifted. The package was dropped. But what happened next is what makes this story linger in your heart—Bernadette didn’t stop at correction, she stepped into compassion. She reached into her pocket and gave the woman the only money she had, just seven dollars, offering dignity instead of judgment. At that moment, something changed. The woman who was about to steal was reminded that she mattered, that she was seen, that she was more than the decision she almost made.

And isn’t that where this story reaches us, especially as women carrying so much—work, home, responsibilities, the quiet weight of showing up every single day? How many times have we felt that nudge to speak up, to say something, to step in—and we’ve stayed quiet, telling ourselves it’s not our place? But this moment reminds us that our voice carries more power than we think.

She Chose to Speak Up and Made a Big Difference

Bernadette didn’t have a platform or a perfect plan. She had a moment, and she chose courage. She chose love. And maybe that’s what faith looks like in real life—not polished or loud, but present and willing. Willing to speak truth with kindness, willing to interrupt darkness with light, willing to remind someone, right in the middle of their hardest moment, that they are still deeply loved by God. Because our words can stop something, soften something, or even save something.

So to the woman reading this in between emails, errands, and everything else—your voice matters. In your home, in your workplace, in your community, in the everyday spaces you walk through. You don’t have to be perfect or have all the right words. You just have to be willing. Because one brave sentence, spoken with compassion, can change the direction of someone’s day—and maybe even their life.
