Courthouse Relies on a Four-Legged Staff Member for Support and It's the Biggest Blessing

A courthouse relies on a four-legged staff member for support, and it’s the biggest blessing. I’m blessed that I get to work from home, and most days, my furry four-legged, big whiskered cat critiques my work. There’s something about the quiet comfort of a four-legged companion that feels like grace wrapped in fur. Which is why this story out of the St. Louis County Courthouse feels so tender—it’s a reminder that sometimes the help we need doesn’t come with words, but with presence.

Inside the courthouse in Clayton, Missouri, there’s a Labrador named Levi who has one of the most important jobs in the building. While judges wear black robes and attorneys carry heavy cases, Levi carries something different—peace. As a trained facility dog placed through Duo Dogs, a nonprofit that equips service and support dogs, Levi has spent the last eight years working alongside the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, helping victims, children, and even staff navigate some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Levi Knows When People Need Him at the Courthouse

"He knows when people need him, and he is always ready to help," St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith shares.

For children who have experienced trauma, walking into a courtroom can feel overwhelming and frightening. But Levi changes that. He gives them something steady to hold onto.

Sometimes they sit on the floor beside him, petting his soft fur as they find the courage to share their story. Sometimes they hold his leash as they walk into court, gaining a sense of control in a situation where they once felt powerless. It’s such a simple thing—and yet, it’s everything. Because when someone feels safe, they can finally speak.

He Helps More Than Just Children

And it doesn’t stop with the children.

"Having this dog available has broken down barriers in ways that I never even expected," Lisa Jones, program manager for the office's Victim Services Unit and Levi's handler, shares.

The attorneys, investigators, and staff who carry these heavy stories every day also find comfort in Levi. After long, emotionally draining hours, it’s not uncommon to see someone sitting quietly beside him, taking a moment to breathe, to reset, to let the weight lift just a little. And if you’re balancing deadlines, family, responsibilities, and the invisible load of being “everything to everyone,” you know how sacred those small moments of relief can be.

Therapy Dogs Can Help in Courtrooms

One of the most beautiful parts of Levi’s story is how far his impact reaches. An eight-year-old boy who met him was so moved that he wrote a children’s book about Levi as a superhero, imagining him as a protector sent to help children in their hardest moments. And honestly, that doesn’t feel far from the truth. Because sometimes God sends comfort in unexpected ways. Sometimes it walks in quietly… on four paws.

What I love most about this is the reminder that not all healing is loud. Not all help looks big or dramatic. Sometimes it’s quiet. Steady. Faithful.

Just like you.

Because if you’re showing up every day—loving your family, doing your work, holding space for others, carrying more than anyone realizes—you are offering that same kind of comfort to the world around you. You may not see it. You may not feel it. But your presence matters more than you know.

Levi may not say a word, but lives are changing because he shows up.

And you? You’re doing the same.

Sometimes, the greatest blessings don’t come in grand gestures. Sometimes… they simply sit beside us, reminding us we’re not alone.
