Monk vocations, part 5

Monk vocations, part 5

A Monastic Observance

As monks, our primary work is prayer. We gather four times a day for prayer and Mass. Time is also set aside each day for private prayer and meditation.

For some of us, our work for the church includes teaching and administering at Saint Meinrad School of Theology, a graduate school that prepares men for the priesthood and laity for service to the Church. A Continuing Education Program in the School offers spiritual and educational enrichment for those who serve the Church and for the lay faithful.

Many of us are also pastors in area parishes, and others provide pastoral assistance to dioceses on a regular basis. We also write books, compose music, instruct novices, tend to gardens and create artwork. We work as carpenters, electricians, landscapers, cooks and tailors to keep the monastery and the Archabbey thriving.

In addition, we manage a Guest House, offering retreats and days of recollection to groups and individuals throughout the year. Others travel around the country giving retreats to parishes and religious groups.

We also operate Abbey Press, a publisher and international marketer of Christian and inspirational gifts, books and greeting cards. Abbey Press operates a full-color printing division for its own needs and for those of its customers.

Our most recent work is Abbey Caskets, offering simple, dignified caskets to the public, which are fashioned after the rustic coffins used for decades to bury our deceased brothers.
