He was actually at the audition to support his sister Schyler in her dreams of becoming a singer. The judges encouraged him to try out. He and his sister were both given golden tickets. 

After his much too soon departure on season 11 of the show, he was given the opportunity to record his own music. From there, he rose to fame because of his smooth vocals and his relatable lyrics. He received two Dove awards and has millions of fans around the world because of his honesty, integrity, and passion for bringing Christ to others.
