When Someone Said I Was “Too Famous” to Date
August 18, 2026

Someone I know was talking to a girl who mentioned she was hoping to get married, and they thought it might be a good fit for me. So they said, “I actually know someone,” meaning me, and pulled up my page to show her. She looked at it and said no. Said I was too famous. Said it would just be too much for her. That one stung more than I expected it to.
Wondering What I've Missed
For a minute after that, I found myself wondering. Have I missed out on things like this because of what I do? Because of the calling on my life? Is this just part of what it costs to build something for the Lord online? It took me a minute to realize that line of thinking was a lie from the enemy. I know the Lord has someone for me in His timing, and that a platform isn't a disqualifier from being known and loved by someone. But I'd be lying if I said that comment didn't get in my head for a bit.
1 Samuel 16:7 - “For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
The Pressure Nobody Sees
Here's what I've been learning underneath all of that, though. Social media has genuinely been rough in ways people don't clock from the outside. People see a following and assume celebrity, assume I've got it all figured out, assume “Joe Christian Guy” has answers to things I'm still wrestling with myself.
2 Corinthians 12:9 - “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
Weakness.”
I don't have all the answers. I never claimed to. But the platform makes people assume I do, and that's a weight I've had to learn how to actually set down instead of carry around all the time.
Learning to Separate the Two
So lately I've been intentional about putting “Joe the Christian Guy” aside and just being Joe. Not talking business, not talking content, not performing anything for anyone. Just existing as a normal guy who happens to also make videos about his faith.
I want people to actually get to know me, not the version of me that shows up on a feed.
What Happens When People Actually Meet Me
Here's the funny part. Almost every time someone actually meets me in person, they say some version of the same thing: “I thought you'd be prideful since you have a big following, but you're way more down to earth than I expected.”
That both makes me laugh and makes me a little sad. Laugh, because I know who I actually am. Sad, because it means the version of me people build in their heads from a screen isn't always accurate, and sometimes it costs me connection before someone even gives the real me a chance.
Where This Leaves Me
I'm not trying to fix how people perceive a following. I can't control that. But I can keep choosing to actually be Joe in the rooms I'm in, not a curated version of myself, and trust that the people who are supposed to actually know me will get the chance to.
Reflection Questions
1. Have you ever felt like people's assumptions about you (fair or not) got in the way of actually being known?
2. Where in your life are you tempted to perform a version of yourself instead of just being who you actually are?
3. Who in your life actually knows the real you, not just the version people assume from the outside?
