The Christian Trend Everyone's Fighting About
August 10, 2026

There's a trend going around right now where people post things like “kinda chic to have a prayer closet in your home,” or “it's kinda chic to choose obedience over comfort.” Bible study at a coffee shop, an outfit post with a faith caption, a prayer closet styled next to a candle, all captioned with some version of “chic.” And a video's been going around pushing back on it hard. The person in it opens by making sure everyone knows what “chic” actually means: stylish, fashionable, elegant, good taste. Her point is that we're using a word about aesthetics to describe things that are supposed to be sacred. She says there's no reverence in it. No fear of God. That hopping on a trend because it's “cute” is the opposite of what we're called to, that we're supposed to be transformed by the renewal of our minds, not conformed to the world, and this trend is doing the opposite, making our faith just blend right back in with everything else online. A lot of people watching that video are left feeling confused, or convicted, or straight-up condemned, like they did something wrong just by posting a prayer corner with a nice caption. Here's where I land on it.
She's Not Wrong That Words Matter
I actually don't think she's wrong that “chic” is a strange word to slap on obedience. Words carry weight, and turning something holy into an aesthetic can flatten it if we're not careful. That part, I'll give her.
But This Is Where It Goes Sideways
What bothered me is that she never actually explained why the trend itself is wrong. No Scripture, no real theology, just a swift correction of everyone doing it. And that's the difference between conviction and condemnation. One points you somewhere. The other just makes you feel bad and leaves you there.
Romans 12:2 - “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
That's the verse she leaned on, and it's a good one. But being set apart doesn't mean we can't use the tools and trends already in front of us. It means our lives look different because of Jesus, not that we have to avoid every trend that exists.
Shifting the Trends Toward Christ
Here's the thing. I've been doing exactly this for eight years, taking what's already trending and putting a holy spin on it. Yes, we live in the world. Yes, we're called to be set apart. But being set apart shows up in how our lives actually look different because of Jesus, not in refusing to touch anything that's popular. I know people who've done this exact “chic” trend, and it's made others want to share Jesus, too. It's brought people joy. It's made faith feel approachable instead of distant. If a trend gets someone talking about prayer, or Scripture, or their faith online, someone they'd have never talked to about it otherwise, that's not shallow. That's an open door.
Joy Over Condemnation
What this whole thing felt like, more than anything, was legalism dressed up as discernment. A Pharisee spirit, correcting people publicly with no explanation, no grace, just a rule. And I think we have to be really careful about that, because shame has never once made someone love Jesus more. I'd rather make people happy about their faith than condemn them for how they're expressing it.
Reflection Questions
1. Where's the line for you between using a trend to point to Jesus and letting a trend water down what you actually believe?
2. Have you ever felt condemned online for something that wasn't actually wrong, just different from someone else's standard?
3. What's one way you could take something “trendy” right now and use it to actually point someone toward Christ?
