84-Year-Old Train Manager Proves You're Never Too Old to Love What You Do

An 84-year-old train manager in the U.K. has never quit doing what he loves. Bob Carpenter is one of London’s oldest train managers. His interest was sparked when a British Rail representative came to his school, and he’s had a strong passion for the rails ever since.

"I've loved the railway since I was a kid. Growing up close to the main line between London Bridge and Brighton, I was sort of born into the sounds of trains," Bob says. 

For two decades, he worked in clerical roles for the Royal Mail. Then he became a catering staff member for British Railways. Later, he achieved his childhood dream and became a train manager for Avanti West Coast, like his grandad.

He never wanted to retire. His work is the reason why he gets up in the morning.

“Looking back, some of my fondest memories are of the Grand National Specials. We used to run in the nineties with volunteer crews," he further explained. "From the moment I left Euston to the moment I got to Lime Street and back again, I just never stopped laughing. As a man of my age at the time, I don't know whether it's working with younger people, but it was the greatest fun I've had in years.”

Inspired by a Family Legacy

Bob’s father loved the rails, and so does his grandson, Nick, who is also a train manager. Avanti West Coast’s customer service manager, Kathryn O'Brien, calls Bob and Nick part of the company’s family. 

"It was inevitable, to be honest, with my grandad being such a good role model," Nick said. "As a child, I'd go to his house with my brothers, and he'd turn up in his uniform at 9 p.m. and tell us, 'I've been to Scotland and back in a day.’ That, for me, was magic."

When Nick was a boy, Bob bought him a toy whistle. He kept it safe and treasured for many years, and now Nick uses it as his whistle for work.  

His first day on the job at Avanti West Coast was working with his grandfather as his guard. Then and now, his grandad has always kept up with the busyness and demanding nature of the role. 

While some older folks choose to stay in retirement homes, Bob gets up every morning and does what he loves. He’s an inspiration to never give up on your dreams.
