Firefighter Was Off-Duty, But He Didn’t Hesitate When Kids Were Trapped Under a Boat

Firefighter Was Off-Duty, But He Didn’t Hesitate When Kids Were Trapped Under a Boat

A firefighter was off duty, but he didn’t hesitate when kids were trapped under a boat, and it makes me think heaven keeps a list of ordinary people who choose courage before they have time to count the cost. People like Texas firefighter Jason Horne know that just because you’re off duty, it doesn’t mean you won’t be needed. Thank God he was in the right place at the right time.

On the Fourth of July, Jason was thrilled to spend the afternoon with his family at Alvarado Lake, enjoying time with his 12-year-old daughter, Emilie. However, desperate cries for help shattered the celebration.

A boat carrying nine people had capsized, and he learned very quickly that lives were on the line when everyone realized three kids were trapped underneath the boat.

Jason dived into the water without a team to back him up or equipment to help him breathe. “I went underwater, under the boat, just seeing if I could grab anything, and I felt a life jacket,” he said. He pulled out a little boy who was still breathing. He brought him to his boat, took another breath, and disappeared beneath the capsized boat again. This time, he found an unresponsive little girl. Climbing onto the overturned hull, he immediately began CPR. Moments later, the sound every rescuer longs to hear filled the air. She started crying, being so scared by the whole ordeal.

And then he did it again, diving back into the murky waters. As other boaters worked together to lift the overturned vessel, another little boy surfaced, tangled in rope and not breathing. Once again, Jason sprang into action, restoring the child's pulse before rushing him to waiting paramedics. Thankfully, because of Jason, all three children survived.

God Places the Right People in the Right Place

Later, Jason admitted the rescue didn't truly hit him until he was alone with his wife. As the father of four, he knew just how close those families had come to unimaginable loss, and everyone was singing his praises for his courage. But said, "I'm glad that whatever lined up lined up that we were where we were when we were there."

As believers, we know those moments aren’t accidents. God places the right person in the right place at exactly the right time. Sometimes, He sends people willing to run toward danger while everyone else is running away. They don’t have wings or a sword and shield, but they carry courage. They don't seek recognition, but they become the answer to someone else's desperate prayer.

Perhaps that's one of the ways God still ministers to a hurting world—through ordinary people whose hands are ready, whose hearts are willing, and whose first instinct is to lay down their own safety for the sake of another. Jason didn’t know those children personally, but in those terrifying moments, he lived out that kind of sacrificial love.

And because he did, three families got to celebrate another sunrise together.
