Coffee Shop Creates Opportunities for Workers with Disabilities, and Inspires a Community

A coffee shop creates opportunities for workers with disabilities and inspires a community. Autism is a common diagnosis, and every day, more families are learning how to help their loved ones thrive in a world that isn’t always built with them in mind. But people like Anthony Palmeri are helping change that story.

Because Anthony doesn’t focus on disabilities. He sees abilities. He sees gifts, potential, and people who deserve the chance to shine.

This is What Inclusion Truly Looks Like

At Chase Coffee Roasters in Fullerton, customers come for handcrafted lattes and fresh-roasted coffee. But they leave with something even richer—a glimpse of what inclusion truly looks like.

The Orange County coffee shop actively hires workers with disabilities, and Anthony says the mission grew from his years as a special education teacher at Woodbridge High School. For a decade, he taught students, many with autism, and often heard the same question from parents: Where can our children find meaningful work?

That question stayed with him.

“This was a recurring theme I noticed and that prompted me to want to try and create an environment for my students,” Anthony said. “We create paying jobs for individuals with disabilities. We promote an inclusive environment. Barriers are broken.” And broken barriers are beautiful things.

Hiring Workers with Disabilities

His very first employee was Chase Tsuma, the barista who inspired the coffee shop’s name. Since then, many of the employees have been Anthony’s former students. Another employee, Joe Barboza, who was diagnosed with autism around age three, says working there has been life-giving. “I have a lot of fun at Chase Coffee Roasters. It’s great to have fun when you meet a lot of new customers, have regulars and make some new coworkers.”

That joy matters. Belonging matters. Opportunity matters.

Another employee, Ian Jeffers, shared that after a car accident and brain surgery affected parts of his memory, the coffee shop created systems to help him succeed—visual cues, printed step-by-step recipes, and workflows designed for support.

He thanked Anthony with words that say it all: “Thank you for making a place that makes this world just a little bit more accessible and functional for people like me.”

Sometimes changing the world doesn’t happen through grand speeches. Sometimes it happens through espresso machines, patience, kindness, and a boss who believes in people.

Every Person Has Value

Anthony is also committed to quality coffee, roasting beans in-house and serving a product customers love. But he knows the real gift being poured out there every day is dignity.

“Visitors think we’re a normal coffee shop,” he said, “but we do so much more.”

Yes, they do. They’re reminding the world that every person has value, every worker deserves a chance, and every barrier can be broken when someone chooses to see people the way God does.

“But Yahweh said to Samuel,’ Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [Yahweh sees] not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7
