Coma Survivors Turned Sweethearts Get Engaged at the Hospital Where it All Began

When you think about coma survivors getting engaged, you’d think that they must have been in a relationship and suffered a severe accident together, or something along those lines. But this case of romance is even more incredible. Zach Zarembinski and Isabelle Richard were teens, each suffering from traumatic injuries, when they met at a Minnesota hospital after waking from their comas. The couple just got engaged at the same hospital last month.

How an Incredible Romance Started

It was 2018 when Zach suffered a brain bleed and collapsed on the sideline of a football game. Isabelle had a severe head injury due to a car accident shortly after. Zach had become conscious before Isabelle, who was in a coma for 2.5 months. He met and comforted Isabelle’s family, reassuring them that Isabelle would be alright.

"I just felt like I knew [she would be okay]. My spirit told me she's gonna be okay," he said, even though he hadn’t met Isabelle yet.

The Two Met and Took a Photo

When she eventually awoke, the two met and took a photo together. Six years passed before their mothers organized a dinner between their families. Then, they exchanged numbers and began dating a month later.

"I knew she was the one…" Zach said. A romantic, Zach had looked back through his journal and found where he recorded their first date.

"We connected from the first moment we met. Our spirits were meant to be," he said.

Zach proposed to Isabelle at the hospital where they met. The staff dropped a hospital curtain to reveal a huge rose-covered heart right as Zach said, “Will you marry me?”

What’s an even bigger miracle than their incredible love story is the fact that they are both alive. Both of their accidents were very serious. “As an EMT, I just knew this is not good,” said Zach’s mom, recalling his collapse.

Zach Was a Living Miracle

Isabelle’s mom, however, was not with her when she got into a terrible car wreck. At the hospital, “I said, ‘Tell me if my daughter’s alive. Tell me if she’s dead. She literally looked like an angel just laying there,” her mom said. “She had shards of glass in her hair still and she was unconscious.”

The doctors told Isabelle’s family that she may never walk or speak again when she wakes. But they found hope by seeing Zach. “Zach is a living, breathing miracle. Just like Isabelle,” Isabelle’s mom said.

Zach told Isabelle, “I just really enjoy how every day, you wake up with a smile and if you can’t even wake up with a smile, you wake up with a positive attitude.”

Isabelle told him, “I know that some days are really hard for you and then you just keep pushing through, saying, ‘God is good.’”

Their story sounds like a movie, and it couldn’t have a more perfect ending. Congratulations to this sweet couple!
