Amazing Grace - Wintley Phipps
As everyone knows, Amazing Grace was written by John Newton (1725-1807). In this rendition of the song by Wintley Phipps, Mr. Phipps explains how the tune may have originated.
John Newton was a slave trader from England who sailed many times to the shores of Africa to capture Africans and take them back to England. He later became a born again Christian and realized what he was doing was wrong, so he began working tirelessly to have the slave trade outlawed in England. He eventually won and the slave business ended in England long before it did in America.
Listen as Mr. Phipps sings this beautiful version of Amazing Grace and explains where John Newton may have gotten the tune to which he wrote those famous and wonderfully true words.
