A Cappella Men's Choir Sings 'How Firm A Foundation'

Check out this wonderful performance by an a cappella men’s choir of the hymn ‘How Firm A Foundation.’

“How firm a foundation, ye Saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word!
What more can he say than to you he hath said, who unto the Savior, who unto the Savior,
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled? In ev’ry condition—in sickness, in health,
In poverty’s vale or abounding in wealth, at home or abroad, on the land or the sea—
As thy days may demand, as thy days may demand,
As thy days may demand, so thy succor shall be.”

In this video, the BYU Men’s Chorus is performing the hymn ‘How Firm A Foundation’ at the Riga Cathedral in Latvia during the BYU Men’s Chorus European Tour. Their voices sound incredible, and the cathedral is a stunning backdrop for their performance.

While the origin of ‘How Firm A Foundation’ is a bit of a mystery, the hymn has been so well-known and loved for many generations. It was first published in 1787 in a book titled A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, and much of the hymn’s text is straight from The Bible. Some of the passages that are included are Isaiah 41:10, Isaiah 43:2, 2 Corinthians 12:9, and Hebrews 13:5.

In the hymnbook, ‘How Firm A Foundation’ is only attributed to “K—“ and the author still remains unknown to this day. But the hymn has continued to bring comfort and encouragement to believers over the years. It was even sung at the death bead of President Andrew Jackson and at the funerals of Robert E. Lee, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson.

We hope that you enjoyed listening to this rendition by the BYU Men’s Chorus of ‘How Firm A Foundation’ today!
