Born Deaf, ALI Shocks The Judges With Her Singing Voice During Blind Audition

Everyone faces adversity and battles, but one young woman surprised some of the biggest names in music with how she has overcome her disability and is thriving.

ALI, a 24-year-old woman from Walnut, California, is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids in both ears. However, that did not stop her from turning in a show-stopping performance on The Voice.

During the blind auditions on the popular program, the young woman beautifully sang Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly.” About 30 seconds or so into her performance, two judges – Kelly Clarkson and Chance The Rapper – both turned their chairs for the young woman.

All the judges, even the two who did not turn around for ALI, enjoyed her performance thoroughly. They were all either singing along, swaying to the music or both. Blake Shelton even played a little air guitar during her audition!

At the end of her performance, ALI revealed that she is, in fact, hearing impaired in both ears, but she still claimed that she’s “so blessed.” All the judges were blown away.

Niall Horan, who did not turn for ALI, was especially complimentary toward the young woman, mentioning how she is soaring despite her obstacles.

“You are incredible,” he said. “Any sort of adversity that you’ve had in your life, you are just jumping hurdles here, and it’s incredible to watch.”

Blake also commented on how, given her dazzling performance, he could not tell she had an issue hearing.

“If you had lined up all the singers that we’ve heard so far and then said, ‘Pick which one is hearing-impaired,’ you would be, probably the last one that I would say,” he said.

Kelly and Chance make their case for why she should select them as her coach. They even offer up pieces of clothing to try and persuade her. Kelly mentions jackets, while Chance has hats. Ultimately, though, Kelly is ALI’s selected coach.

Proverbs 24:10 “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.”
