Loretta Lynn's Granddaughter Amazes American Idol Judges With Her Own Song

The granddaughter of country music legend Loretta Lynn showed that musical talent runs in the family when she amazed the judges with a performance of her original song on American Idol.

Expectations, especially those we place upon ourselves, can be difficult to live up to and fulfill. They can cause an unnecessary amount of stress, worry and concern. Those expectations can become a burden, weighing us down. Expectations can have us constantly second-guessing ourselves, wondering if that was the proper way to do or say something.

Emmy Russell knows all too well what it means to try to live up to expectations. Her grandmother was the late legendary Loretta Lynn. Emmy, with Loretta Lynn as her grandmother, grew up singing and being on a tour bus.

Before her audition, Patsy, Emmy’s mother, mentioned why her daughter was so nervous. She said it had a lot to do with coming from a musical family and having those expectations that she and others may have placed on her.

“I think that when you come from a musical family, the shadow is so big,” Patsy said. “How do I fill those shoes? Well, the deal is, you don’t. You make your own shadow.”

The young woman sat down at the piano, tickling the keys while beautifully singing her original song, “Skinny.” During Emmy’s lovely performance, the judges gave each other knowing looks.

Katy Perry also told Emmy she shouldn’t compare herself to her grandmother. Instead, she should be herself because she has been blessed with plenty of talent as well.

“I don’t think you need to compare yourself to what grandma was,” she said. “You’re totally different. You shouldn’t give yourself all that pressure.”

Ultimately, the judges gave her three yes votes, bringing the young woman to tears.
