A Very Black Friday

Black Friday is that infamous day after Thanksgiving where scores of Americans are expected to rush to their favorite store and buy lots of things for Christmas for dirt cheap. Some even camp out the night before just to get a better shot at the incredible deals!


But something happened this past Black Friday that really changed my perspective on the whole deal…You probably saw it in the news: A 34 year old Wal-Mart employee in New York was trampled to death by the crowd that was rushing into the store where he worked to buy stuff. And then…reportedly…when store management announced that they were closing the store because someone died, people started booing and getting upset because they wouldn’t be able to buy the stuff they’d been waiting so long to buy.

Can you believe that?

Seriously…this whole deal completely blew me away! Have we…as a society…really sunk so low that first of all we would trample one of our fellow human beings to death just to save a few bucks on a new flat screen? And please tell me that we…as a society…wouldn’t then proceed to boo store management and get all upset when they decide to close the store because someone died?! You’ve got to be kidding me!

Have we really become a society that is so focused on ourselves…so consumed with our own stuff that we’ve sunk this low?

It may be tough to admit, but it’s sad that this is what we’ve come to. And if I try to excuse it away by saying, “Well if I were there at this Wal-Mart on this particular day, something like this never would’ve happened…” then I think we’re sadly mistaken, because this is not about our society. This is not about some Wal-Mart out there somewhere. This is about me and my heart! This is about what Iâ€
