Walking in Obedience Will Make You Look Crazy

Until It Does Not

Walking in obedience to God will often make you look crazy at first.

Noah looked crazy building an ark when there was no rain.
Moses looked crazy confronting Pharaoh with a staff and a promise.
Joseph looked crazy trusting God after betrayal, slavery and prison.
Even Jesus looked crazy to many who watched Him live in perfect obedience to the Father.

Obedience has never been popular in the moment.

I remember when I was in high school. I was known as that Christian guy who played tennis. I never got invited to the parties, and many times when I shared experiences I was having with the Lord, people would make fun of me.

That hurt.

There were moments I felt deeply frustrated. I wanted a connection. I wanted to talk with my friends about the things I was learning and seeing with God, but there was a disconnect. I did not feel understood, and at times, I felt alone.

But I did not let that detour my spirit from seeking Him.

Sometimes following Jesus will make you look strange to the groups you are part of. Obedience can feel isolating. Faithfulness can feel misunderstood. But Scripture reminds us that we are not called to fit in. We are called to follow.

Galatians 1:10 says, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

It was not until adulthood that I began to see the fruit. Some of the same people who once made fun of my obedience now encourage me and even praise the faithfulness they once mocked.

God sees what others overlook. He honors obedience, even when no one else does.

If God has called you to walk a certain path, stay obedient. It will be worth it. Maybe not immediately. But always eternally.

As 1 Samuel 15:22 reminds us, “To obey is better than sacrifice.”
