High School Team Makes Time for Fourth Graders Who Became Their Loudest Fans

These exuberant 4th-grade fans in Salt Lake City, Utah, will put a smile on your face. The kids cheering for their basketball team have their own mini-student section on the bleachers. It’s safe to say they’re the high school team’s biggest fans.

The group of kids has been attending the games for a few years.

“Not because they personally knew anyone on the team, they just loved going,” one mom said.

And this year, they got their own jerseys.

“I think that kind of fueled their fandom a little bit — they felt like a part of something bigger,” she said.

The 30-odd kids originally attended with their parents, but started making their own section. They wanted their team to have a larger fan base than the opposing team.

When there’s a game on, the boys come in spiritwear, waving posters and taking off their shirts.

Kids' Cheering Basketball Team Get Special Surprise

One boy, Owen, asked one of the high school players, Reiser, to come to his 4th-grade game, and he said he would.

“The boys kept saying they knew he’d show up,” one of the boys’ moms wrote. “We didn’t hear their conversation & didn’t even know if our boys gave him the right game info because #4thgradeboys.”

Reiser told his coach, who asked the whole team to go.

He said he “knew as soon as we made that announcement that everyone was going to come because we have great kids in our program that love supporting others.”

"Once the whole team was there, they just started going wild for the boys: any steal, any foul shot, any basket, they just were on their feet and not just clapping, but screaming and jumping up and down,” the mom said.

A Game They’ll Never Forget

This pumped up the young team, which went on to win its game.

"As a parent, you're teaching your kids what matters in life, you're hoping they're going to be good people and be kind, and you hope other parents are teaching their kids the same things," the mom said. "This experience gave me hope in all of that paying off."

This is the kind of community building that makes everyone feel united. It’s so heartwarming to see. Hopefully, those kids will grow up to be kind young men, just like the ones the high schoolers look up to!
