After Calling 911 to Help Save Her Father’s Life, Young Girl is Being Honored By Her Community

After calling 911 to help save her father’s life, a young girl is being honored by her community. She didn’t freeze up, she didn’t panic, she did the next best thing, and Mia Bates took action.

After Mia’s father suddenly fell down the stairs and lost consciousness, the young girl quickly realized something was wrong. With her mother at work and no one else around to help, Mia ran to the phone and called 911.

Mia Was Calm When She Called 911

Staying remarkably calm, Mia explained the situation to the dispatcher, provided the necessary information, and waited for help to arrive. When paramedics reached the house, she even opened the door to let them in.

Her quick thinking may have saved her father’s life. Even more remarkable is how grown-up she acted in the moment. She even put their beloved dog in her kennel so the EMTs could swiftly work on her dad. I can’t imagine how scared she must’ve been, but I do know seeing the lights of an ambulance must’ve felt like the rescuing she needed for her daddy.

Now, Mia’s hometown of Lynwood is honoring her courage in a big way. One month after the frightening incident, the village announced that she would receive the Key to the Village in recognition of her bravery. The award will be presented by the Mayor alongside local first responders who helped that day. Talk about a fun, memory-in-the-making moment!

They, too, said what she did was unforgettable, saying her “bravery and quick thinking” made all the difference when her father needed help most.

Her dad, Xavier, later shared that he lost consciousness immediately after the fall, leaving Mia as the only one who could act in that critical moment. Thankfully, her calm response and call for help brought paramedics to the home quickly. What an incredible lesson we can all learn from her. We can teach our kids to reach for the phone and reach out for help.

Despite all the attention, Mia’s advice to other kids is simple: be brave. And sometimes, bravery looks like a small voice on the other end of a phone — making the call that saves a life.
