Grandma’s Last Day of Chemo Becomes Even Sweeter with Military Granddaughter’s Surprise
September 16, 2026

Grandma’s last day of chemo becomes even sweeter with military granddaughter’s surprise. And fair warning, this one will make you misty-eyed, so grab the tissues before you watch 68-year-old Barb Ewers turn the corner at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital.
Nurses were waiting for her, cheering, “Welcome to your last treatment!” That moment alone would have been enough to bring tears. Barb was finishing chemotherapy after facing breast cancer for the second time. She was first diagnosed in 2012 and went into remission after radiation, but in 2025, the cancer returned. “This has been a lot harder than the first time,” Barb said.

Her 19-year-old granddaughter, Faith Dyer, knew exactly how much this day meant. The problem was that Faith serves in the Air Force and is stationed seven hours away at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. When she realized she was going to miss her grandmother’s final treatment, she decided to try anyway.
Faith asked her supervisor for last-minute time off, fully expecting the answer might be no. Instead, everyone worked together to make it happen. So Faith got in her car and drove through the night. Seven hours in the dark, still in uniform, all because Grandma was ringing that bell and Faith wanted to be standing there when she did.
Somewhere along that long drive, exhaustion nearly won. “I was tempted to pull over and go to sleep,” Faith said. “But I’m like, ‘OK, either you go to sleep right now or you see your grandma.’ So I picked my grandma.” And that sentence might undo every grandmother reading this.
At the hospital, Faith tucked herself into a corner and waited. She was shaking, nervous and excited, trying to stay hidden while nurses welcomed Barb for her final treatment.
Then Barb rounded the hallway. Someone pointed toward the corner, and she looked. There stood Faith. Still in her Air Force uniform. Waiting for Grandma.
Grandma’s Final Chemo Day Becomes Even More Meaningful
Barb's face crumpled the instant she recognized her. The two reached for each other and folded into a hug, and suddenly this last day of chemotherapy held something even sweeter. It was relief and exhaustion meeting love in a hospital hallway. “I didn’t expect that in a million years,” Barb said. “It was just utter shock.”
For Faith, being stationed far from home while her grandmother battled cancer had been one of the hardest parts. “It’s hard not being there for my family and supporting them through it,” she said. “So you just pray and do anything you can, really.” This time, Faith could do something. She drove seven hours home.
One Simple Choice Shows the Depth of a Granddaughter’s Love
And Grandma understood exactly what those seven hours meant. “Just to know that a young person would care that much and put in that kind of an effort to come and see their grandma, I felt very loved and very special that day,” Barb said. But we all know just how special grandmas are to youngsters.
This kind of love stood quietly in the corner of a hospital hallway wearing an Air Force uniform, waiting for Grandma to notice. Faith had a choice that night, and she put it as simply as anyone could: “I picked my grandma.”
