95-Year-Old Veteran Honored by Schoolchildren in Sweet Birthday Celebration

A 95-year-old veteran honored by schoolchildren in a sweet birthday celebration will make you misty-eyed. You may want to grab a box of tissues. That’s because sometimes the people who change a community don’t stand on stages or make headlines. Sometimes they simply stand in their yard, wave with all their heart, and make children feel seen on an ordinary school morning.

That’s exactly who Bob Jones has been for the last two decades in Clermont County, Ohio.

Bob is a Beloved Part of the Neighborhood

Around here, Bob has become a beloved fixture in the neighborhood. Day after day, year after year, he has stood outside his home waving at school buses as they pass by. Children wave back. Drivers honk. Windows roll down. Voices call out, “Mr. Bob!”

Some even shout the sweetest words of all: “I love you!”

Can you imagine what that kind of steady kindness does to a child’s heart? To know someone is waiting to greet you before school even begins? To know someone notices you? For twenty years, Bob has handed out joy in small waves and warm smiles. And last week, the community decided it was time to give some of that love back.

Veteran Birthday Surprise

To celebrate his 95th birthday, neighbors and local schools organized a school bus parade just for him. Bus after bus rolled by in his honor, creating the kind of birthday surprise that cannot be bought.

It was gratitude on wheels while Bob shared what those daily interactions have meant to him. He shared in a slow, quiet sort of way, “I wave at the kids and bus drivers, and they wave back. A lot of people in the cars wave, and the kids roll the windows down and then holler, ‘Mr. Bob.’ Some of them say, ‘I love you.’”

Neighbors say everyone who meets Bob loves him. Shelly Tipton explained that generations of families now know his kindness. “My sister drives for a bus. And this is the second or third generation of students that are coming by.”

Think about that for a moment. Three generations of children have grown up seeing the same faithful man waving hello. That's a legacy that shows up in beautiful ways like consistency, steadiness, and kindness.

Bob Jones reminds us that you don’t need a platform to make a difference. You just need a willing heart and a hand ready to wave to make someone feel seen, heard, and even loved. And on his 95th birthday, those children and drivers made sure he knew something important: every smile he gave away came back multiplied.

“And let us not get tired of well-doing; for at the right time we will get in the grain, if we do not give way to weariness.” Galatians 6:9

A Prayer for Jesus to Calm the Storms of Life - Your Daily Prayer - May 15

We are so similar to the Twelve Disciples. When a storm comes upon us, we instantly doubt the Lord. Rather than doubting Jesus, we must trust Him. Just as He calms the roaring waters, He can also calm the storms of our lives.
