Abandoned at a Train Station as a Baby, Woman Finally Finds Family at 76

In London in 1949, a 5-week-old newborn was abandoned at a train station. A whole 76 years later, she learns that she has a half-brother, and they meet for the first time. It’s a complete miracle.

After the police looked for the baby’s family and did not find them, Christine Rawlings was placed with an adoptive family. 

“Whoever did leave me obviously cared,” she told ITV’s Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace. “I was left in a warm carriage, and it was inevitable that I was going to be found.”

When she was in her 40s and had children of her own, she began to look for her birth family. She couldn’t find them. She had compassion for her family and understood how they could give her up. She gave her own son up for adoption when she was 19, which she regrets.

DNA Test Reveals Two Relatives

Thanks to a DNA registry, she met her son a few years ago and formed a relationship with him. In her search for her son, she unexpectedly found out she had a maternal half-brother, Barry, who was one year older than her. 

She finally met him through the UK TV show, Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace. Barry had been left in the hospital by his birth mother and never knew her. He went into foster care but never knew his foster parents weren’t his real parents. 

“I felt that I didn’t belong there,” he said of his upbringing. “But I didn’t know they weren’t my biological parents… If I was naughty, they used to put me in the cupboard under the stairs in the dark for a couple of hours. Just let me sit there.”

Brother Didn’t Know His Foster Family Wasn’t Biological

It wasn’t until after he finished his studies that he learned the truth, which he calls a “bombshell.”

Barry found out his mother’s name was Joyce Norma Brockwell. When he and Christine met, they realized they were both born in the same hospital. 

Christine also found out that her father was a Scottish merchant seaman named Oswald, who relocated to the U.S. in the 1950s.

A Happy Ending 

“I now know who I look like,” she said about meeting Barry and seeing photos of her parents. “The children look like me, but I look like somebody else.”

Barry was very emotional upon meeting Christine, and understandably so. These two individuals have had their own sets of hardships in life, but now they can spend the rest of it knowing they’ve got each other.
