Grandson Honors Grandparents’ Nearly 60-Year Marriage With Surprise Church Vow Renewal

A grandson surprises his grandparents with a vow renewal ceremony after nearly 60 years of marriage. He touched more than just his grandparents, as the video of the ceremony went viral on TikTok, warming hearts everywhere. It’s as sweet as sweet can be.

The grandson, Philip Winham, a 27-year-old photographer from Texas, began to organize the ceremony in April. He gathered friends and family for a date in July. The grandparents, 78-year-olds Becki and David Roach, thought they were just going to renew their vows and pose for photos. They didn’t know that Philip was taking them to the Louisiana church where they married, where all their friends and family were waiting for them.

“I wanted to put on a vow renewal as a way to honor my grandparents, God’s faithfulness in their life, and the love and devotion they bring to our whole family,” Philip said. 

The couple celebrated 59 years of marriage in July, but their record of togetherness goes back to the sixth grade when David moved to the same Louisiana town as Becky. By ninth grade, they were dating. David was the captain of the high school basketball team, and Becky encouraged him from the sidelines as one of the school’s cheerleaders. They both decided to go to Louisiana Tech University after graduation. 

Grandparents Share a Beautiful Example of Lasting Marriage

They built a life together, modeling for their children and grandchildren what real love looks like. 

“They showed me what it looked like to love each other by spending every morning on the porch with their coffee, each in their rocking chair, holding hands, praying together, and reading their devotion,” he adds.

During the renewal, Beckie told David that she will always remember how he’s loved and cared for her, which brought Philip to tears. 

As months of hard work culminated in the day of their renewal, Philip was relieved and blessed that it went just like he thought it would. He’ll look back on it as one of the most meaningful things he’s ever done. 

Surprise Vow Renewal Touches Hearts Beyond the Family

The impact of the ceremony wasn’t just tremendous for those who attended. When others saw Philip’s viral video, they reached out with happy memories of the couple. Those included students from Beckie’s 33 years as a teacher and a distant relative the family had lost connection with. 

Winham hopes that others will be encouraged by his grandparents' beautiful example of faith and love. 

How many grandparents can say that their grandkids have done this kind of thing for them? Beckie and David are blessed to have so many who love them and to be leaving such a legacy.
