First Responders Rescue 9-Month-Old From House Fire By Going Through Window

First responders rescue a 9-month-old from a house fire by going through the window. God doesn’t just use the mighty, the powerful, or the well-known to perform miracles. He uses everyday people, right in the middle of their ordinary Monday mornings, to do the extraordinary.

Sometimes it looks like a young mother named Alannah Thies waking up to the sound of her dogs coughing, realizing that her house was filled with smoke. Sometimes, it looks like a sheriff’s deputy climbing through a nursery window, heart pounding, racing toward the cries of a baby named Reed.

Alannah Knew Something Was Wrong When She Woke Up

In northwest Andover, Minnesota, God used neighbors, firefighters, and a brave mama to write a rescue story none of them will ever forget.

“I took a breath and I knew there was something wrong,” Alannah said from her hospital bed, describing the moment she realized their home was on fire. It was just before 7 a.m. Reed’s daddy, David, had already left for work. The smoke was too thick—she couldn’t get down the hallway. And her baby? Her sweet 9-month-old Reed was still in his crib.

But God was already moving.

Alannah Had Closed the Nursery Door

While flames raged and time ticked away, Alannah did something small that made a life-saving difference: she had closed the nursery door. A simple act, done in love and intention, slowed the fire just enough. And that door? It became a shield of grace.

First responders arrived in minutes, knowing a baby was trapped. “Mother, you could tell, was trying to get back into the dwelling to save her baby,” said Fire Chief Dennis Jones. But neighbors and responders held her back.

Then came the rescue. “Quick actions of our sheriff’s deputy and our deputy chief—we were able to get through a window and find the baby right there in the nursery,” Dennis added. Reed was pulled to safety. And by the grace of God, that baby is smiling, clapping, and scooching around like nothing ever happened.

Alannah and Reed Are Safe After Being Rescue From the Housefire

Alannah and baby Reed are safe. They lost their home and two dogs, but they didn’t lose hope.

“We have what’s important to us, and we’re eternally grateful to the people that helped us and helped Reed,” Alannah said.

This story reminds us that sometimes the hands of heroes look like your neighbor’s. Sometimes, they look like firefighters covered in soot. And sometimes, they look like a mama who kept a door shut and stayed brave when everything was falling apart.

Because that’s what God does—He steps into fire, smoke, and chaos and uses the willing, brave, and everyday faithful to do something miraculous.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
