Three Virginia First Graders Save Their Teacher After She Started Choking On Her Food

Three Virginia first graders saved their teacher after she started choking on a piece of food. Buckle up because you will be stunned by these amazing little heroes. Sometimes heroes are just six or seven years old, sitting cross-legged on carpet squares, holding crayons, and sounding out spelling words. At Lakeview Elementary School in Colonial Heights, these three boys reminded everyone that courage doesn’t wait for adulthood.

Last month, 23-year-old teacher Madison Swift was eating while working with a student when something went terribly wrong. “I suddenly started choking on my food,” she said.

Her face flushed red and her students immediately realized something wasn’t right. “All of a sudden, her face and eyes started going red,” recalled six-year-old Bryson Doss.

That was enough for his classmates to jump into action. Six-year-old Dereck Contreras-Franco pressed the emergency call button on the classroom wall, then yelled for help so someone would hear. Bryson ran into the hallway to find another teacher.

“I knew that she was choking and I knew I needed to get another teacher,” Bryson explained.

Kolton Stayed By His Teacher’s Side

While the others sought help, seven-year-old Kolton Hersh stayed by his teacher's side. He leaned her forward and began giving back blows, not because he had medical training, but because his heart knew she needed him.

“The student next to me bent me over and started doing back blows to my back to where I dislodged the food,” Madison said, grateful beyond words. “They 100 percent saved my life.”

At the end of the week, she rewarded each of them from her treasure box, though every adult around them knew the real treasure was far bigger. Lakeview Elementary honored them on social media, sharing their picture with the caption, “Thank you to our Lakeview heroes!”

She Calls Them Her Little Life Savers

Madison commented, “My little life savers!!”

When Jesus talked about greatness, He pointed to children. Not because they are small, but because their hearts are open and ready to respond. These boys didn’t stop to wonder what an adult might do. They simply did what compassion told them to do.

One pressed a button. One ran for help. One stood beside someone who couldn’t breathe. And together, they saved a life.

Heroes don’t always wear uniforms or badges. Sometimes they are small enough to sit at classroom tables with dangling feet, small enough to fit a whole world of courage inside a first-grade heart. Kolton, Dereck, and Bryson remind us that heroism isn’t measured by size, age, or strength. It shows up in kindness, quick thinking, and choosing to help when someone needs you. Heroes truly come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes the very smallest among us carry the biggest bravery of all.

Psalm 91:11 “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
