Brave 5-Year-Old Climbs 35 Feet Up a Tree, Firefighters Rush to the Rescue

Firefighters are used to coming to rescue when it comes to cats in trees, but a little boy stuck high above wasn’t exactly what they had in mind. A brave 5-year-old climbs 35 feet up a tree, and firefighters come to the rescue.

Malachi Eckerson is a little boy full of energy and adventure. He never seemed to run out of ways to keep his parents on his toes. But this was a whole adventure that even had firefighters on their toes. He literally took his love for climbing trees to new heights—literally. On April 22, 2025, Malachi managed to scale a towering tree before realizing he couldn’t get back down.

Malachi’s Parents Will Be Telling the Story For a Long Time

"We're going to tell the story about Malachi climbing the tree for a very long time," said Nate Eckerson, Malachi’s dad, laughing as he recounted the unforgettable moment. His voice was filled with both relief and humor, knowing that his son’s bold adventure had turned into a much bigger story than anyone had anticipated.

It all started when Malachi, with his usual adventurous spirit, found a board in his daddy’s woodpile. With his little hands and big determination, he used the board to climb up to the lowest branches. From there, the 5-year-old scrambled his way to the top, and that’s when Malachi realized he was stuck and there was no way for him to get down. He was perched comfortably on a branch, holding onto another branch for stability. Thankfully, he wasn’t in immediate danger, but the Eckersons knew they had to act quickly.

The Firefighters Were Able to Rescue the Boy

With no time to waste, Hayley and Nate dialed 911. Firefighters from the Rehoboth Fire Department arrived promptly, prepared for a rescue like no other. "Everyone knows fire departments respond to cats stuck in trees," they joked on their Facebook post. "Well today was a first for us—responding to a kid stuck in a tree."

Rehoboth Fire Chief Frank Barresi explained that they arrived with their ladder truck and carefully drove it down the long, narrow driveway. "One of the captains secured him with a rope and a belt just to make sure he was safe and carried him down a ladder," Chief Frank Barresi said.

It’s a Story About Bravery

Within minutes, Malachi was back safely on the ground, and the firefighters’ mission was a success. While the family is grateful Malachi wasn’t hurt, they’ve already made plans to keep a closer eye on their little adventurer moving forward.

But for now, it’s clear that Malachi’s climb up that 35-foot tree will be a family story that’s told and retold for years to come. It’s a story about bravery, quick thinking, and of course, the spirited nature of little boys who never back down from an adventure—even if it takes a firetruck to get them back to safety.
