Young Boy With Autism Finds Friendship and Support at His Neighborhood Grocery Store

A young boy with autism finds friendship and support at his neighborhood grocery store. This is one of those stories that deserves to be shared with the whole world. It starts in the Casanova home in Faribault, Minnesota, and is a tender choreography of love and motion — a plastic slide tumbling down a staircase, beanbags waiting like soft clouds at the bottom, and a five-year-old boy named Odin who feels the world with his whole body.

As a mom who raised three children on the autism spectrum, my heart recognizes this scene immediately — the intentional strategies, the deep breaths, the holy patience that grows in quiet rooms where children are simply allowed to be themselves.

“We tell him, he just has extra wiggles,” Taylor says with a gentle laugh. “Got to get the wiggles out.” And when the wiggles outgrow the walls of home, Taylor knows exactly what to do. “Let’s get in the van,” she smiles. “We’re going to Fareway.”

The automatic doors slide open, and Odin moves like joy in sneakers, eyes shining as he grabs his beloved “tiny cart.” Taylor doesn’t even bother suggesting other stores — she knows this is his place. “This is his favorite thing to do, probably in the world,” she says. And I understand that down to my bones, because sometimes the most ordinary places become sacred when they offer our children safety, rhythm, and belonging. Pools may be fun, but they don’t have produce — and they don’t have Odin’s people.

Odin Lights Up When He Finds His Friend

Inside Fareway, the aisles feel less like commerce and more like community. “Haley!” Odin squeals as he runs into the open arms of produce manager Haley Yeo, who has loved him well enough to attend his birthday party two years in a row. At checkout, he shouts for Wendy and wraps Jay, the bagger, in a fearless hug. But his face truly lights up when he spots Maynard Abraham returning from the parking lot. Odin sprints straight into his embrace, and Maynard meets him there with steady kindness.

Taylor once captured the day Odin made Maynard a birthday card — a small offering of a child’s heart — and the way Maynard finally let him hug him. “God didn’t make nobody perfect,” Maynard says simply, and somehow that sentence feels like grace wrapped in denim and name tags. He and Odin chat about root beer and waffles as they bag groceries together, and in that ordinary moment, heaven feels near.

It Is Difficult Having a Child With Autism

“It is very tough having a kid with autism, for sure,” Taylor admits — a truth every autism mama knows too well.

Yet Fareway has become one of her bright spots, a place where she can catch her breath while store employees love on her little boy. Odin arrives wiggly and leaves calmer, held by the gentle rhythm of belonging. In a neighborhood grocery store, God has stitched together strangers into something like family — a reminder that love often shows up in the most everyday places.
