Children raise money one cup at a time to buy bikes for their new friends. For generations, a bike has been a child's first taste of freedom and adventure. Come to think of it, I have scars on my chin from learning to ride my bike, but it was worth it because summer and childhood always seemed to travel on two wheels.

But for one group of kids in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, this summer proved that the coolest thing they could do wasn't beat the heat; it was share that freedom. When they learned their new friends didn’t have a set of wheels, they decided to do something about it. And it will blow your mind and remind you that it truly is the little things that matter the most. 

The Children Noticed Their Friends Needed Bikes

For four days, a group of children living at the Woonsocket Motor Inn spent nearly six hours at a time selling $1 bottles of water and 50-cent ice pops. Their goal wasn’t some new fancy toy; they wanted to buy bicycles for two new friends who had recently moved into the motel and didn't have any.

"We thought of getting them bikes because they didn't have any and their mom couldn't afford any, so we decided to help them," Christian Blackwood said. "We all grouped up and did it together."

Kids Raise Money to Buy Bikes for New Friends

The idea started with friends Cayden and Nathan, and before long, the entire neighborhood lemonade-stand spirit kicked into gear, except this stand offered water bottles, frozen treats, and kids who wanted others to taste childhood freedom. 

Ashley Blackwood watched proudly from the sidelines as her children, Christian and Tatianna, worked alongside their friends.

"They had total control of the whole thing," Ashley said. "I thought it was great. It's a good feeling for me as a mom knowing that my kids were raised right—that they'd rather do something for someone they know than keep the money for themselves."

Their Kindness Inspires the Local Community

Their idea to help others quickly caught the community's attention. After raising nearly $100 on their own, the local Boys & Girls Club donated a girl's bicycle, while an anonymous donor surprised the children with a bike for the boy.

Just like that, every child in the friend group had wheels to ride. Now the kids spend their summer racing down the hill behind the motel together instead of taking turns sharing bikes.

Ashley hopes their story has a ripple effect and continues on. She said, "I hope this inspires other kids to want to do the same—to help their friends. Maybe it'll inspire adults too."
