Hero kids save a wounded dog who went missing after a terrifying car crash. Sometimes the biggest heroes don't wear uniforms or capes. Sometimes they wear life jackets, balance on paddleboards, and simply refuse to leave someone behind.

For one frightened golden-colored dog named Sugar, that kind of compassion made all the difference because she was lost, hurting, and in need of help. After a terrifying rollover crash in Vermilion, Ohio, Sugar disappeared into the nearby woods, leaving her family wondering if they would ever see their beloved dog again. 

Dog Goes Missing After Terrifying Car Crash

Police said the driver had been texting when the vehicle struck a large landscaping boulder, causing it to roll several times before coming to a stop. Sugar had been thrown from the vehicle and fled into the woods, disappearing for days.

Days passed with no sign of her. Then, when hope seemed to be slipping away, an ordinary summer adventure became an extraordinary rescue thanks to a few kids. Ten-year-old Maverick Sharon was spending the day paddleboarding with 11 other friends on the lake when something along the rocky shoreline caught his attention.

Kids Find Sugar Trapped Along the Shoreline

As the group reached the shore, they noticed a dog trapped between the rocks. "I was like, 'Oh my gosh, there's a dog,'" Maverick recalled. Sugar was frightened, injured, and unable to free herself.

Maverick raced to find help while his family called 911. That's when they learned the injured dog was Sugar, the beloved pet who had gone missing after a devastating car crash their community had been talking about. When officers arrived at the shoreline, they quickly realized rescuing Sugar wouldn't be easy.

First Responders Free Sugar From the Rocks

"The officers arrived on scene and immediately realized that we were going to need the expertise of the Vermilion Fire Department to get her out of the rocks," Vermilion Police Chief Scott Holmes said. "It was a severe angle of the shoreline and rocky."

The Vermilion Fire Department carefully freed Sugar from the rocks before a Life Care Ambulance transported her to the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic for treatment. For Chief Bill Brown, the rescue was one of those moments first responders never forget.

"To have the happy ending like we did with both owner and the dog being safe was certainly a big plus," Bill said.

Community Honors the Kids Who Helped Save Her

A few days later, all 12 kids gathered at the Vermilion Fire Station, where they were honored for their quick thinking and compassion.

"I can't thank them enough for their heroism and bravery," Vermilion Mayor Russ Owens said. The mayor even surprised the young rescuers with a special reward. "I'm going to take them to their favorite restaurant for dinner," Russ announced.

Sugar's owner says she was deeply touched that so many people cared enough to help save her dog. Today, Sugar is recovering well at home, resting comfortably in her own bed. As for Maverick, his biggest concern was still his furry friend. "I hope Sugar is doing well, and please take good care of Sugar," he said.

Dogs have an incredible way of becoming part of our families. They celebrate our happiest days, comfort us through our hardest ones, and love us with a loyalty that asks for nothing in return.
