A city employee spots an abandoned baby in the street and rushes to save their life. Some moments split life into two parts: before and after. For Michelle Jones, it happened in the middle of an ordinary workday on Goodfellow Boulevard in St. Louis.

She was driving her Street Department truck when something ahead made her slow down. A blue car sat stopped in the middle of the road. Then, to her disbelief, she watched the driver place a child safety seat in the middle of the busy street.

"As I was approaching the car, that's when I saw the driver take and set a car seat out into the middle of Goodfellow," Michelle recalled. "When he saw me approaching his vehicle, he took off and fled the scene."

There are moments when heaven seems to whisper, Don't drive past. Michelle didn't. She pulled her truck as close as she safely could, shifted into park, and ran toward the car seat. As traffic continued flowing around her, she made a heartbreaking discovery.

Inside was a baby. "I immediately pulled my truck as close as I could to the car seat, put my truck in park, got out, immediately called SLMPD, and stood beside the baby to make sure that he was safe," Michelle said.

She wasn't thinking about the clock or the work waiting for her. She was thinking like a mother. A mother of three. A grandmother of 20. A great-grandmother of 10.

Michelle Jones Stops Traffic to Protect the Child

"Your motherly instincts kick in," Michelle said. "I wouldn't have done anything different but to stop and make that baby was safe and placed back home."

As she drew closer, the reality of what she was seeing settled into her heart. "I was lost for words. I was devastated. It was very scary," Michelle said. "When I noticed this infant in this car seat, the closer I got, I saw the feet with little white socks."

Little white socks. It's such a small detail, yet somehow it's the one that catches in your throat. Tiny feet that should have been kicking in the safety of a nursery were instead sitting alone in the middle of a busy roadway.

Police Arrest Suspect After the Shocking Incident

Police later arrested Christopher Pearson, 36, who now faces charges including first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest. Michelle can't stop thinking about what could have happened.

"Fast as traffic that people are driving today, anyone could have killed that baby," she said.

One Woman’s Quick Action Helps Save a Baby’s Life

But they didn't. Because one woman noticed. One woman stopped. One woman refused to keep driving. Afterward, Michelle reflected on the timing of it all.

"I just thank God I was there to save him," she said.

Maybe that's how God so often works, not always by parting seas, but by placing the right person in the right place at exactly the right moment. And somewhere tonight, because Michelle listened to the quiet nudge to stop, one little pair of white socks is still kicking.
